A gimlet with gin. Vodka works, too.

It being nearly summer and all - pay no mind to the slate-tinted skies, all you unfamiliar with Colorado weather - it's time to switch our drinky habits from foppish springtime refreshers to powerful, honest, American cocktails. Leave that Flip on the bar, hang your linen pants back in the closet, switch on the baseball game and pour yourself a gimlet.

They don't come much simpler: basically nothing but gin (or vodka, favored by legendary cross-dressing director Ed Wood) and Rose's Lime Juice. Some add simple syrup, some add soda water, but the bones always remain the same. The gimlet also has a distinguished history in literature, having been featured in stories by Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Chandler. How much more red, white 'n' blue can you get?

The following is a classic recipe featuring not a bell or whistle. Substitute vodka if you're feeling like channeling the man who gave us Plan 9 From Outer Space.

* 2 ounces gin

* 1/2 ounce Rose's Lime Juice

* 1 lime wedge

Pour gin and Rose's into a mixing glass half-full of ice; stir well, strain into cocktail glass and garnish with lime wedge.
