Barack Obama shakes hands with students of MESA School in Thornton, Wednesday afternoon. Obama delivered a speech on education and also toured the school.

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama shared his vision for education today at a school north of Denver that is emblematic of change. The Rocky blogged live from Thornton.
3:30 p.m. Democrat Barack Obama today vowed to fix the "broken promises" of the No Child Left Behind law if elected president.
Campaigning in the metro area one day after Republican John McCain, Obama said he supports standards and testing but said U.S. schools haven't been given the resources they need.
"I'll start by fixing the broken promises of No Child Left Behind," he said at the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts in Thornton.
Obama said the U.S. education system is falling behind other nations', especially in math and science.
Obama has 1,979 delegates — 47 shy of the 2,026 necessary to clinch the nomination. Rival Hillary Rodham Clinton has 1,779 delegates.

The following live dispatches were filed by the Rocky's Bill Scanlon during Obama's appearance in Thornton today.
2:45 p.m. Evie Hudak, a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, said she’d been waiting all her life to hear a speech by a presidential candidate that zeroed in on what is most important about education.
“It was inspiring,” said Hudak, who is running for state Senate. “At times it brought tears to my eyes.
“To hear a presidential candidate talk about the importance of teachers, and their needing to be paid like the professionals they are ...I’ve been waiting to hear a speech like that.”
Hudak said she also liked Obama’s emphasis on the importance of parents in education. “That message needs to get out. Obama would make a big difference. He gets it -- on the most important things, he gets it.”
2:30 p.m. Anna Lord, a member of the Manitou Springs board of education and a candidate for the state House, said she liked Obama’s message that “our economy depends on the quality of our work force. There are no short-term solutions.
“If we have an educated work force, we’ll be OK, if we don’t we won’t be," she said, paraphrasing Obama.
“It really comes down to how we educate our next generation.”
12:55 p.m. Outside in the blazing sun, veterinarian Tom Adduci and his wife, Candace, said they like Obama's emphasis on education.
"It was invigorating," Tom said. "I liked that he talked about revamping No Child Left Behind.
"Rather than just saying no child should be left behind, he talked about a plan and put monetary rewards on it.
"I like his support for teachers and for a college education, in exchange for service like the Peace Corps or the military."
Candace said he had not before heard Obama get specific on the issues and came away impressed, especially with his detailed plans for education.
12:50 p.m. Obama seemed to win over just about all the audience, from students to seniors.
"I liked how he said he'd try to make community colleges free," said Cassandra Villareal, 17, a junior at Skyview Academy, which shares a campus with MESA. "He's a real people-to-people person, talking about how parents should read with their kids and help them do well in school."
Cassandra wants to go into interior design or respiratory therapy, so has her eyes on community college. Obama talked about a $4,000 tax credit for community college students.
12:36 p.m. The last questioner, a student, engages with Obama in a conversation about small schools. "Small schools can be very successful," Obama says. "If you feel like you're just a number, you're just lost." He said smaller schools is just one strategy that should be pursued. "I'm really proud of you," he tells the school. "See you back in August," he says in reference to the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Obama's appearance has concluded and he is shaking hands on the way out. We'll bring you more reaction shortly.
12:33 p.m. "How do we scale up, how do we take the lessons of a great school like MESA, so we can have a hundred schools like MESA?" Obama asked. We need to produce more and more great educators, he said. "That's the most important challenge we face in the next few years," he said.
12:27 p.m. "All the reforms I'm talking about will not happen if we don't have the American people enlisted in change," Obama says. He wants all legislation posted on the Internet before actions are taken; he wants town meetings for Americans; he wants summits broadcast live. American government needs more transparency, he says.
12:25 p.m. "Unless we can solve our energy problems ... our economy is always going to be hamstrung," Obama says. "We have to reduce our dependence on foreign oil."
12:23 p.m. An audience member says he met Obama in the Bronx. Obama deadpanned sarcastically, "I couldn't tell you were from the Bronx," in reference to the man's accent. The questioner drew more applause by saying Obama has support from the Bronx to the Rocky Mountains.
12:18 p.m. "When it comes to second-language learners, the most important thing is not to get bogged down in ideology, but figure out what works," Obama says. "Everybody should be bilingual, or everybody should be trilingual." The comments drew loud applause.
12:16 p.m. "We've got to have creative students and teachers to innovate. It's harder to be creative," Obama says, but change is necessary for improvements in education.
12:13 p.m. Obama has completed his speech and is opening up a Q&A for 20-30 minutes.
12:06 p.m. We need to simplify the paperwork for applying for financial aid, Obama said.
12:01 p.m. The most important thing for any child's education is the teacher, Obama says. We must recruit a new generation of teachers and principals to replace those who are retiring, he says. Obama said he would launch a new recruitment program to help facilitate the transition. "To prepare our teachers, I will create more teacher residency programs," he said.
11:58 a.m. Children should be able to master standardized tests, to help accurately assess the quality of teaching in the classroom, Obama said. These ideas are just one part of "fixing" No Child Left Behind. "We will require teachers in Washington who are willing to learn lessons from Thornton" and elsewhere, he said.
11:56 a.m. "This shows what can happen when politicians are not wedded to old ideas that don't work," Obama says of the school.
11:51 a.m. Obama speaks highly of the school, praising the fact that all 44 members of its senior class will go to college. He says "this is a defining moment in our history," and education reform must play a leading role. In today's economy, you must have a degree, Obama says.
11:47 a.m. Barack Obama has just taken the stage and is greeting students, after an introduction from former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer.
11:25 a.m. Barack Obama will be speaking shortly after a brief tour of the school. (Watch the speech live using the link at left.)
11:10 a.m. Bob Kihm is 53, his daughter Sarah is 20, and they're both national delegates for Obama. Sarah is campus coordinator for Obama at CU-Boulder.
"We worked our Democratic a---- off for Obama," Bob said, standing next to his daughter and greeting people in the auditorium.
"He'll be a significant change in the way we're going to do politics in this country," said Bob, of Centennial.
"We've never had a worse status in the world than we do now," Bob said. "George Bush thinks that's not important. I think we're finding out that it is."
Bob was wearing a T-shirt that featured him and Obama, with the caption "Get out of my car!"
Bob explains.
The first time Bob met Obama and asked for an autograph, the candidate was kind enough to invite him into his car so he could offer up the signature.
When Bob met Obama again several months later he asked the candidate if he could this time write: "Get out of my car."
Someone snapped a picture, and the rest is history.
11:06 a.m. Inside the school, in the spacious auditorium, Ed and Pat Kaufman, of Thornton, have choice, second-row seats -- thanks to her being in recovery from a recent knee operation.
They simply called the number in the newspaper and got the seats, said Ed, 65.
Ed is voting for Obama "because he has common sense and his message is real. He is not a cowboy."
He would like to see Obama mend fences with the rest of the world.
"You can't accomplish anything with a monologue," Ed said. "You need a dialogue."
Pat, 66, likes Obama because she says Hillary Clinton's prescription for universal health care will be too expensive right now.
"We have to move slowly and steadily toward health care for everyone."
The married couple said they're finally at an age where health care is excellent in America but that they worry about generations that are younger than they are.
10 a.m. Squeezed between orange-vested traffic cops and an anti-abortion trailer, two Hillary Clinton supporters remind Democrats that the race isn't over.
Camilla Lewis, of Denver, is wearing a sandwich board, featuring a picture of her with former President Bill Clinton.
"A vote for Obama is a vote for McCain," Lewis said. "It's as simple as that.
"He can't win the swing states -- Colorado, West Virginia, Ohio or Indiana. Hillary is the only one who can beat McCain," said Lewis, who was a local and state delegate for Hillary.
Ralph Thurman, an African-American from Denver, says he's met Obama and likes him, but "Hillary would be better for the country.
"This country is not ready for Obama yet," Thurman said, waving a Hillary sign on York Street about 90 minutes before Obama is scheduled to speak on education.
"There are factions in this country who are not ready for a minority president."
9:17 a.m.Presidential hopeful Barack Obama is expected to give his vision for education today at a school north of Denver that is emblematic of change.
Obama, in the lead for the Democratic nomination, will speak at 11:30 this morning at the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts, one of 17 small schools that the students in the 5,800-population Mapleton district can attend.
His talk is not open to the public, but it will be carried live at RockyMountainNews.com (click on link at left).
In 2001, Mapleton Schools started looking for a more personal type of education that could reach students and give them a better chance to prepare for college. Prior to the change, all high-school-age students attended venerable Skyview High School.
The new schools have names such as Mapleton Prep, Global Leadership Academy, Front Range Early College and Welby New Technology.
The idea is for students to sit down with their parents and decide which learning option -- emphasizing arts, leadership, trades, etc. -- is the best match for them.
Two and a half years ago, Bill and Melinda Gates endorsed Mapleton's radical plan to change the way education is delivered, in the form of a $2.6 million check from their foundation.
This year, all 44 high school graduates at MESA were accepted into one college or another.
The good news was tempered a bit last November when district voters said "no" to a $70 million bond issue request to upgrade schools and make them safer.
Last year in Des Moines, Obama said, "I don't want to send another generation of American children to failing schools. I don't want that future for my daughters. I don't want that future for your sons. I do not want that future for America."
The planks on Obama's education platform include:
— Reform the federal program, "No Child Left Behind." According to his official Web site, Obama wants to boost funding for the law and says teachers "shouldn't be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests." And he would change the way schools are accountable to the law, "so that we are supporting schools that need improvement, rather than punishing them."
— Recruit teachers. Obama would create Teacher Service Scholarships covering four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate teacher education, including alternative programs for mid-career recruits in exchange for teaching for at least four years in a high-need field or location.
— Make math and science education a national priority.
— Address the dropout crisis by directing more monies to middle schools to address the problem in the early stages.
— Double federal funding for after-school programs to serve 1 million more kids.
— Support English language learners. Obama says transitional bilingual education will help English learners get ahead.

I agree that education is a local responsibility best handled by local boards of education.
If that were the case, I doubt if Colorado would have more than 3-4 charter schools. The state puts a lot of pressure on a district to implement charters.

You want CHANGE in education?
Tell us, Barack Hussein Obama -- If teachers are the most important part of a kid's education, WHY ARE THEY UNIONIZED? When did unions ever boost QUALITY of OUTPUT? They don't! They protect labor rights, not product quality.
The largest labor union in America is the NEA. Their claim is to "build great public schools for every child". Nice --- but what about the ACTUAL EDUCATION of the child? They love raising our taxes for big expensive new schools, yet the kids are continually undereducated.
The second largest labor union in America is the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Anyone seeing a trend yet?
The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. The NEA and AFT's iron-fist grip on this nation's educational system must be replaced by a standardized meritocracy like it was prior to 1960.
And a flying "FU" to the unionized DPS teachers who's "sick-out" today deprived kids of yet another day of "education".

"Just because someone doesn’t want to learn another language has nothing to do with their intellectual fortitude. Obviously you are lacking in the area of common sense."
well, two things on that. one: not wanting to learn another language actually does say a lot about your intellect, to me at least. now, wanting to learn a second language, but simply not being able to devote your time to it is another thing. but to say you DONT WANT to learn another language sure seems dumb to me. how's that for common sense?
"Nobody in here even probably opposes learning a second language; they just don’t want to learn the one "O" wants them to learn."
and what language is that? i sure don't see where Obama expressly said what language that was in this article... and i don't see where this would be an executive order... rather, it just seems like he was saying a rather dumb and common sense idea that everyone should be able to speak two languages.
but, again, racism plays a big part in people's reaction. because they ASSUME he is talking about spanish. which, many people associate with illegals. people who come out and say 'i shouldn't learn spanish, they should learn english' are ignorant, because they are myopically looking at the situation instead of the larger picture. I think i am rather accurate in calling them what they are.
to another poster:
"Anyway, you make it sound like we should learn to speak India's native language so when we call customer service, they don't have to speak English to us."
where do you get that from my post? that said, what would be wrong with that? i mean, many of you bash mexian immigrants and say they shoudl speak english.. .but if you were a smart businessman and you dealt with hispanics (lets just say, legals for this debate) then you would be better served to become bilingual in spanish. in fact, you'd likely be running a better company than a similar person who refused to speak english based on some ignorant idea that spanish shouldn't be spoken in america.
and who "the hell do" i think i am? i think i'm another poster on here, just like you. it'd be one thing if you weren't name calling as well on here, ketttle. but you are just as black as this pot.

Why does this say I'm a moron? Because you have no logical or other argument other than name calling? Did you go to the Bob Schaffer school of debate?
Lets see - first I never said two languages should be limited to Spanish. But I do think that that's what everyone assumes and that's why they get all up in arms. Because illegal immigration has become such a hot button issue...and like it or not, there is a lot of open racism here in Colorado.
Any second language (including Spanish) would serve people well if the U-S wants to continue to grow in the global economy. I think Chinese or other Asian dialects will become very important as well.
I'm not saying we should become ONLY Spanish Speakers - or adopt another language altogether, but there would be no harm done if more people were bilingual, it would likely be a good thing.
And that goes both ways - I do think that folks who come here from other countries should learn English as well - a lot do, contrary to popular belief on here.
It enriches peoples' development to know more than one language - as soon as I can dedicate the time I'll be learning a second language, and I can't wait!

rickg, I'll take your word for it that supplies are now slightly over what they were before the war. But the war started years ago and during much of that time, oil production levels were unpredictable and mostly well below pre-war levels.
In other words, that's a long time to have to reap up a lot of profits. Oh, and Iraq is also a member of OPEC again - where the Sauds can keep tight control over their production levels. That's one of the threats Saddam posed. Since Iraq wasn't a member of OPEC during his reign, they didn't have that kind of control.

That shows that your justification for claiming that the war in Iraq was to reduce supplies is factually wrong. And as a result, your use of that erroneous justification makes your conclusion about Bush to be erroneous as well.

Does anyone care to explain why Obama's statement was wrong that being bilingual is a good thing? To me it seems like a similar statement as saying "People shouldn't eat too much" or "People shouldn't smoke". It's so obvious that usually you wouldn't make such a statement. In America though people tend to be completely unaware of the merits of being fluent in two or more languages. It opens up all sorts of doors to the person and gives them a new way of thinking and another perspective from a foreign culture since there are often elements of the culture embedded in the language and in the process of learning the language you usually learn much about their culture.
Someone above mentioned going to the Netherlands and how most of them spoke English. They are often trilingual and are taught English starting in early elementary school and a third language in junior high (usually German I think).
We have a very lousy education system in the US and the farther we get behind other countries the harder it will be for us to keep our current prominence in the world.
If you think local education is the best method, find one other country in the world that emphasizes local education with weak federal regulation that is better than, say, the Netherlands' education system. You aren't going to find one since virtually every other industrialized nation (probably all of them) have much more strict national control of their education system than the US and are mostly kicking our butts in any test you can think of (especially math in high school).

Actually - the weak U.S. dollar actually has a lot to do with the high price of crude. It's a huge factor...so there are more than two reasons.
But that brings up something interesting. The weakening U.S. dollar.
As the global economy continues to grow the U.S. is going to have to keep up or it will crumble. It's as simple as that. Now in order to compete in a global economy - it's helpful for people to speak different languages. China and other parts of Asia as well as Latin America are huge emerging players in said global economy.
How anyone can think that learning a second language is a bad thing is beyond me.
-----
Also, Obama supporters are stupid? Do you (whoever said that) not read anything besides RMN...are you also a Fox News fan? Obama supporters are among the most highly educated people in this country.
Why do supporters continue to defend what he says? Because the media choose to take little sound bites completely out of context and readers/watcher eat it up without care of context or what he is actually saying/standing behind.

So how is Obama going to support the US born English speaking students in school to become bi-lingual? Classes since elementary in another language? BO's DEMOCRATIC platform.
1) No changes on illegal immigration. In fact, don't require U.S. identification when voting so that illegals can vote for him too.
2) Immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, so that Muslim extremists can claim they won & attract more terrorist followers.
3) More artsy-craftsy classes for students so that their minds are more easily influenced by liberal politicians.
4) Don't develop U.S. energy supplies in ANWR (where no one would want to visit) or along the Gulf coast. Thereby, keeping the U.S. dependent on Middle Eastern oil.
5) Also, keep up the ban on building new refineries in the U.S., so that even if we develop U.S. oil fields, we couldn't refine it anyway. Both policies (#4 & #5) keep the cost of gasoline unreasonably high.
6) Talk to dictators without conditions to give them credibility amongst their extremist followers.
7) Voice support for Israel, but undermine that support through action after election.
8) Cut military & intelligence spending back to the levels of the Clinton era.
9) Increase taxes on everyone so that spending on social programs can be increased along with the budget deficit.
10) Free healthcare for everyone, including illegal immigrants, the lazy & good-for-nothing non-workers, etc. Of course, government liberals will tell you what treatments you are allowed, which doctors you see and when you can get get treatment. After all, government liberals will know better than you what you really need.

The link provided previously was to show that your allegation that the reason for the Iraq War was to create "less supply" is inaccurate. The data shows that oil supplies to American consumers is actually higher... not lower.
To reinforce the invalidity of the claim that the reason for the Iraq War was to reduce supply is to look at the Iraqi production levels over the past 30 years.
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/country/coun...
You'll see that the average annual oil production in Iraq is higher since the war started, than it was for the decade preceding the Iraq War. Also, it was even higher than it was during the 1980s.

Wait, I'm sure it just must be me, but isn’t it a little funny how RMN changed the headline on this one. From the language thing to the education criticize Bushy thing. Ohhhh, how convenient, they saw that the language one was negatively affecting their leader so they changed it, wow that was way tooooo obvious.

Yes, I did read the other details from the ANWR report. Even with those details, the authors of the report concluded....
"The opening of ANWR to oil and gas development includes the following impacts:
reducing world oil prices,
reducing the U.S. dependence on imported foreign oil,
improving the U.S. balance of trade,
extending the life of TAPS for oil, and
increasing U.S. jobs"
So that leads to the key question....which of those significant benefits to Americans are you opposed to?

I like how that one guy spelled the word "the" like "TEH". LOL that's pretty clever! This kind of witty repartee could often be found on the blog of Deb Frisch. Look her up sometime.
Spelling like that shows that you spit in da face of da man! You sure got the man good I tell ya. That's so Che!

Obama "vows" to fix NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, hey, great, ahhh, how............ I read the darn article, ahhhhhhhh, where exactly is it he explains how? Welcome to America 2010:
Gas = $10 a gallon
Terrorist strike in our cities = monthly, but fluctuates to daily depending on the kill the infidel season
Food = Have to stand in line for those handouts because they can’t afford the gas prices to ship it anymore.
Education = Free, but were too broke to eat so it wont matter anyway. And free to everyone but you, oh ya, and by the way, you have to pay for it somewhere (taxes, duh)!
Language = You pick, up north it will be Norwegian, depending on what part of the soil you reside, the language will be different.
Air Travel = that will be a memory
Medical Care = Also free, but you have to wait in line for six weeks to get that basketball sized lump in your mid-section, no, not diagnosed or treated, just looked at.
Wow, we’ve been missing out on so much stuff, I just can’t wait!
I just cant wait for what Obama is going to tell me when a rouge group of violent terrorists takes over one of my kids schools, he'll say, were going to "change" that, I will bring "hope" back to your schools! Its open target on America baby, we are going to be circling the drain. Sad part is, I am sure there are people, probably in this forum that can’t wait, and are licking their chops.
But hey, at least everything is not the Mc"same"!!!

can't you folks on the extreme ends of the political spectrum at least come up with some new, laughably inaccurate material in order to keep it interesting?

"Evie Hudak, a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, said she’d been waiting all her life to hear a speech by a presidential candidate that zeroed in on what is most important about education. “It was inspiring,” said Hudak, who is running for state Senate. “At times it brought tears to my eyes.
“To hear a presidential candidate talk about the importance of teachers, and their needing to be paid like the professionals they are ...I’ve been waiting to hear a speech like that.'"
Evie is an idiot that shouldn't be allowed within 5 miles of a child.
What kind of moron thinks they've never heard a politician use speeches to praise 'teachers'? Morons like Evie.
What kind of moron thinks that a politician promising to pay teachers more is a first time event in history? Morons like Evie.
What kind of moron thinks that a politician has never before said that teachers are "important"? Morons like Evie.
Gullible morons like Evie should stick to what they know... swallowing whatever politicians slide to them.... since the morons fail to realize when they've been conned by a politician making empty promises about "education".
