Kaiser Permanente on Wednesday announced plans to move its national customer service division to Colorado next year, adding another 200 jobs.
Kaiser, which has 8.6 million health plan members in nine states, is relocating its customer service center from Fort Worth. The Texas center employs 278 workers, and about 200 jobs will shift to Colorado while the remaining 78 will go to a California center.
The division processes member enrollment, billing and collection for five Kaiser Permanente regions, including Colorado. Some employees will relocate, while other positions will be filled locally, Kaiser said. The move will begin in late 2008 or early 2009.
Colorado was picked over several other potential locations in part because of its central location and large Kaiser membership in the state. Kaiser hasn't provided medical services in Texas for nearly a decade.
"We are very pleased that Colorado was selected for this relocation project," said Donna Lynne, president of Kaiser Permanente Colorado, in a statement. The move will allow Kaiser to "bring key service functions closer to our customers," she said.
The customer service division will likely be located near Kaiser's regional headquarters in east Denver, she said.
Kaiser employs 5,200 in Colorado and is one of the 10 biggest private employers in the state, according to the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. Nationwide, the health plan has 156,000 workers.
Kaiser is the largest nonprofit health plan in the state, with 483,000 members in the Front Range.
Including for-profit health care plans, Kaiser is the fourth-biggest insurer in the state as of June 30, after Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare and Aetna, according to Colorado Managed Care newsletter.
