Sprint is discontinuing its Broadband Direct high-speed Internet service on July 31.
The service required a direct line of sight from a mountaintop transmitting tower and an antenna dish installed at a subscriber's home.
Sprint offered the service in a limited number of cities, and it hadn't been marketed for several years. The number of remaining customers wasn't immediately available.
One longtime customer, Dan Whipple, of Broomfield, said he was disappointed to learn the service was being discontinued.
Whipple said he got the service about seven years ago when he had only dial-up Internet as an option. He said the Sprint service was "terrific," producing download speeds of up to 1.5 megabits a second and serving all four computers in his home.
