Denver Public Schools' chief academic officer announced today that he is leaving the district to return to New York City.
Jaime Aquino, who was recruited by DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet in September 2005, will stay through at least September to help train his successor and prepare the 73,000-student district for the new school year.
"After much careful thought, Jaime has decided that the time is right to begin the process of rejoining his friends and family in New York," Bennet wrote in an e-mail today to DPS staff. "He will begin looking for work there, and we will begin the search for his successor."
Aquino was a local instructional superintendent for the New York City Department of Education, supervising a network of schools in lower Manhattan, Harlem and the South Bronx before coming to DPS.
He had lived in and around New York City since emigrating to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in 1987 to teach children in New York City public schools.
"His contribution to our collective work has been extraordinary, and his commitment to our kids has been unparalleled," Bennet said. "He has become one of my closest friends, and I admire him as much as anyone with whom I have ever worked."
