The familiar, mournful tone of bagpipes rose up from the concrete boundaries of Denver Police Memorial Plaza today as honor was paid to the 60 men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty.

A solid blue square of uniformed officers standing under a hazy sky were joined by officials such as Chief Gerry Whitman, Manager of Safety Al LaCabe and City Auditor Dennis Gallagher, as well as family members of fallen officers.

Among those survivors was Kelly Young, widow of slain officer Donald Young. Addressing the crowd, Young said, "I'm reminded every day that Donny is gone, but I'm also reminded today that he is missed."

Young urged the officers to remember to take the time to "tell your wife you love her," and "give your kids an extra hug," before they went to work each day."

After Whitman had helped plant the final of 15 new trees in the plaza, local singer Jake Schroeder performed a stirring version of Amazing Grace.

After the ceremony, many of the officers lingered. Some for the refreshments, most for the sense of camaraderie. Many wandered over to the memorial to look at the names chiseled into the rose granite. Hidden behind sunglasses were eyes that occasionally let go of tears.
