Brian Lehmann / Special To The Rocky
Jeffrey Sahli, 14, has been raising and lowering the American flag each school day for the past two years at Evergreen Middle School.
Brian Lehmann / Special To The Rocky
Jeffrey was presented with a flag that flew over Camp Liberty near the Baghdad airport in Iraq at a surprise ceremony at school on Thursday.
Jeffrey Sahli noticed the faded, fraying American flag outside Evergreen Middle School soon after he started eighth grade last year.
"I thought the flag wasn't being treated with flag etiquette. I thought I needed to do that," the 14-year-old said. "I wanted to serve my country and I thought, heck, I'll start right here."
With the principal's permission, he began taking care of Old Glory. Every school day he carefully hoists the U.S. and Colorado flags before classes and takes them down before heading home. He folds the Colorado flag into a neat square, the U.S. flag into a triangle, and places them in a cabinet in the office.
He keeps them inside on stormy days.
Susan Roy didn't know Jeffrey but saw him every time she dropped off and picked up her son at Evergreen Middle.
"Jeff would be out there - rain or shine - it didn't matter," she said. "He just wasn't taking it down, throwing it over his shoulders and taking it inside. He was very purposeful about it."
"As simple as it is to some people, it really is a big deal. He doesn't do it for an attaboy.
"He just does it because it's right."
Roy was so impressed that she told a family friend stationed in Iraq about Jeffrey. First Sgt. Timothy Horan serves with the Kentucky National Guard's 138th Fires Brigade.
"You don't hear of kids taking that kind of responsibility, especially with something like that," he said. "A lot of younger kids think it's corny."
Horan bought a flag at the military store and hung it above Camp Liberty near the Baghdad airport on Jan. 30 in Jeffrey's honor.
The next day, he was flown out of the country for emergency heart surgery. Friends sent the flag to Horan this spring. He got it to Roy who gave it to Evergreen Principal Jane Sutera.
Sutera arranged a surprise ceremony Thursday at the school where a shocked and grateful Jeffrey received the flag and a certificate from the Army recognizing his patriotism.
"I've never been recognized for doing something as simple as that," he said.
"It was one of the best feelings I've had in my life."
He said he wasn't embarrassed by the attention because he wants people to see what he stands for.
"I stand for duty, honor, God and country."
Jeffrey doesn't come from a military background, though he hopes to attend West Point.
He wears a cross and a dog tag on a chain under his shirt. The bands on his braces are red, white and blue.
Outside Evergreen Middle School, the flag is clean and bright.
Jeffrey said the flag reminds him of the soldiers serving in Iraq.
"When they're coming home, I wanted them to see the flag flying high."

I read through all the comments and they praise the young man (and rightly so) and they also comment on the fact that we wish more young people were so patriotic. Children do not automatically disrespect and hate America. It is us, the adults (especially the parents - liberals who hate patriotism and conservatives who allow the media and the teachers to instill THIER values upon our children) that are at fault for the apathy and disdain that our children have towards their country, and it makes me sad. It's hard for a parent to instill proper values when the Dems, the teachers, the newspapers and television all tell them you don't know what's best for them.

What an awesome young man and many adults could learn from him.
When my older son, a Marine, was stationed in Iraq my youngest son, who was 8, was with me at the local high school to watch a baseball game. When the national anthem was played we all turned toward the flag and my son and I realized it was hanging by only one rope, dangling in the wind. It was dirty and frayed.
During the national anthem many of the parents were visiting. Players were kicking dirt around. None of them were giving the flag or the song the respect they both deserve. After the game my 8 year old went up to the baseball coach and told him that the flag needed to be taken down and replaced because it was dirty and torn and the rope was broken. The coach looked down at him and "Maybe you can find someone to do that. I don't have time."
My little guy said, "I will. My brother is fighting for that flag." When he told me what the coach said, I approached the coach and got the same rude response. So we called the local VFW post and they arranged for someone to come take the flag down and dispose of it and put up a new one.
Many times I am at high school sporting events and am amazed at the lack of respect shown to the flag and the national anthem by students, parents, teachers, coaches and administrators. This young man is a credit to his parents.

bjamin - You have no idea what you're talking about and you have NO RIGHT to label democrats and teachers as unpatriotic. Spend some time visiting schools and teachers. You DISGUST ME. As a teacher, I take pride in educating my students, of every race, about what it means to be an American, to be an aware and active American and to appreciate our country. I bet I'm far more optimistic about our country's future than you are. More patriotic too.
My students know the meaning and importance of the flag and they know that patriotism is about more than just waiving a flag.
By the way folks, for the those who get upset about flag burning or old faded flags at schools, the flag code (which everyone knows says the flag can't touch the ground, should be treated courteously, etc.) also says that the flag should never be worn as apparel and should never be used for advertising purposes. Happens all the time. Shout when you see it happen.

Are you a flag burner? You sound as if you think it's ok,your comparing things that could be misconstrued as disrespect when showing patriotism. I agree The Flag should never touch the ground, but burning the Flag shows the utmost disrespect. Are you being sarcastic or trying to educate those who don't know? As a Veteran I would much rather see an American flag bandana or a business sign with one. Rather than seeing one go up in flames or with a swastika drawn in where the stars should be. Let's not confuse etiquette with disrespect.

Too often one sees a flag maintained horribly in front of restaurants, homes, etc; it's usually not done deliberately, but out of ignorance. More people need to step up and say something when they see a flag maintained incorrectly. As a disabled vet, I've gone into several businesses to let them know how they were disrespecting their flag; most were very responsive ("oh, I didn't know that...").

To Jeffery Sahil,
What you are doing is one of the finest things I have seen in a long while. I know you are not doing this honorable task for any reason other than it is the right thing to do.
Jeffery, you have no idea how many lives you have touched by your selfless act of honor. This story is traveling the web right now, this very second. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen stationed all over the world are being sent this story. I hope you can sense the swelling of emotions, the pep in the step, and just plain old pried and appreciation these men and women are felling right now.
Old war horses in VFW and American Legion lodges all over the country will hear about this and their faith in the country that they fought and suffered for will be restored. At drill in the morning, a copy of this article will be posted in our squad room and read at formation.
One final thing, West Point would do well to file this away for future reference!
Gob bless you and your family.

BMat, by then I think he'll deserve a rest. :) Besides, his actions are probably prompting schools everywhere right now to spruce up their flag, so maybe he won't have to do this by the time he's in high school.
What most impressed me about this article is that he's picked a duty and stuck with it. A lot of adults could benefit from such a lesson in discipline and "stick-to-it-iveness."
I would love to see the RMN run even more stories of initiatives kids in Colorado are selflessly taking on, from trail maintenance and litter pick up, to moving elderly neighbors lawns for free.
This was a great article, my only critique is that some of the posters on BOTH sides couldn't resist the temptation to do some partisan mudslinging.

Yeah, Jeffrey! Amazing that this wonderful story is published the day after a 32 year old co-worker of mine laughed after reading an article that the USA Flag is not to touch the ground. He thought that was a joke and not fact.
Keep up the great work, Jeffrey! YOU are our future and we are proud of you!

Way to go, Jeffrey! And it's about time for us adults to do the same thing when we see our flag, national and state, being treated the same way at banks, stores, and government buildings such as courthouses and post offices. For too long I've seen our nation's flag threadbare & faded or handled in a carefree manner at too many locations. Let us all follow Jeffrey's fine example!

Jeffrey you are an inspiration to all, especially this old vet. Don't put too much stock in what this "Vail" person says. He is proof positive of what I have always believed, "Freedom has a price that the protected will never know". The truth of the matter is that America is full of young people just like yourself and without dragging politics into this keep believing and doing what is right just because it is right, not because your told too or because it "feels right", or for accolades. Don't worry about being a great person, just follow your heart and history will put you where you need to be.

Eastvail speaks of obediance! He is the epitome of the indoctrination the Ward Churchills and other liberal professors would like the youth to learn in the classrooms.

Good job Jeff. Back in the day this was called color guard we did it for all the same reasons you do it. That was way before our corrupt government took all the school funding. We also stood up every morning saluted the flag and said the Pledge of Allegiance in its entirety. You are a good egg and your parents should be proud. Keep up the good work kid. I hope that some day we can call you Mr. President and you might be able to restore the purity and dignity that our country so deserves.

Would someone please send this article to the Stars and Stripes? If I knew how to do it, I would. I think all of our military personnel would be proud of this young man. What a great example he is of what it takes to be a great American. This should be on national news.

Granny, I forwarded it to Stars and Stripes. This kid is so incredibly unselfish. There are so many more like him, we just don't hear about them. Maybe us adults could take the time to seek out other kids like Jeffrey. He is a class act.

So many times this is how it begins, with simple things, simple acts; to see a problem as an opportunity...where most look and say, "Somebody ought to do something", someone else declares, "Hey, I AM somebody!" If enough of us took this kind of responsibility we would have the kind of community we dream of. We can make it happen.
