For a Littleton couple and their two children, a two-week trip to China has turned into a lesson in earthquake relief.
Chris and Wendy Tuey and their two children, Cian, 6, and Cuinn,4, were in Chengdu on Monday when the 7.9 quake hit. When the Chinese government opened the disaster area to foreign relief workers, the Tueys opted to stay and help.
In an e-mail sent Thursday, Wendy said her husband Chris, who has physician's assistant training, was one of the first medical teams to go into Beichuan, a remote town near the quake's epicenter. She said the teams would be working 36-hour shifts.
When he returns, Wendy said she hopes to join a search team in the disaster area.
Wendy, who is a lawyer, said she has been working in Chengdu helping secure supplies and finding places for rescue workers to stay. She said they were scrambling to find big military-style tents for refugees to stay in.
"Our host family's son, who is 18, managed to get 5 of them," Wendy said in her e-mail.
She wrote, "Some people are contributing their time and others money but the unified response is pretty incredible."
The Tueys are considering becoming missionaries and were on a two-week trip to China. They were in a five-story building when the quake struck and escaped with no injuries.
