Workers at a King Soopers warehouse in west Denver were evacuated shortly after 10 this morning when a forklift operator apparently struck a piping system causing a leak of ammonia.

"Hazmat shut it down, but a pool of liquid remains and we don't want to evaporate it into a cloud, so we're looking at options right now," Denver Fire Department spokesman Phil Champagne said of the incident at the warehouse at 65 Yuma St. east of Federal Boulevard.

"No one was hurt," he said. "We evacuated as a precaution.

"We talked about evacuating the surrounding neighborhood, but it looks like that isn't going to be necessary."
