A 54-year-old Fort Collins man drowned in Horsetooth Reservoir on Monday afternoon after he tried to retrieve his boat that had gotten loose from a mooring.
Witnesses said the man, later identified as Richard P. Weisel, was at a cove at the north end of the reservoir when he dove in and swam toward the boat. As the boat continued to drift away, Weisel turned around to swim back to shore, but went under, said Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Department.
Witnesses dove in and hauled the man back to shore, but paramedics could not revive him. Weisel was taken by helicopter to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is being performed today.
