Hip surgery for Karl likely within 2 weeks

George Karl might be at the NBA Finals, although he wouldn't be moving very fast.

The Nuggets coach is expected to have his left hip replacement operation in 11/2 to two weeks, and he should know more in the next few days about an exact date. He said the operation might not keep him from the Finals, if his son, Coby, were to make it there with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We've talked about it," Karl said of the possibility of seeing his son deep in the postseason. "I don't know what the travel restrictions would be, but I'd think you could walk with a walker or a cane."

The Finals will start June 3 or June 5. Karl expects it will be about six weeks after the surgery before he can fully walk on his own.

Until his surgery, Karl will continue to have meetings with Nuggets brass about offseason plans. There were talks last week, with more expected this week.

With assistant Mike Dunlap likely to leave to become the University of Arizona's associate head coach, Karl might have to look for a replacement.

"There's a lot of people who would like to join our staff, and we have staff members who would like more responsibility," Karl said of the possibility of replacing Dunlap. "But I would take my time to evaluate it. There's no urgency."

The Nuggets are losing a head coach in the making in Mike Dunlap.

George Karl, Colby Karl, are those men getting frequent user discounts at the medical supermarket?

    Fast healing, Coach.

Check your doctor’s history Coach and make sure they are an experienced hip replacer. A bad hip replacement can haunt you. I will just say even the best practices have inexperienced surgeons sometimes. Usually the best hip doctors are built somewhat like your trainer.
