Denver Botanic Gardens volunteer Cathy Jo Clawson, of Littleton, tries to figure out which sign goes with which plants in preparation for the 58th annual plant sale today and Saturday.
Teller us Morey
Don't just slump on your love seat wondering what you - one small individual caught in the world's merciless gearbox - can do for Teller Elementary and Morey Middle School. Take action by attending TellerPalooza/Moreypalooza (we think TellerMoreyPalooza rolls off the tongue a bit better, but no one asked us), a fundraiser for the two schools featuring live performances by Angie Stevens & The Beautiful Wreck, The Panic, The Autumn Film and The Reals. Not feeling the rock 'n' roll? Then show up early for the sets by the schools' student bands and hip-hop by the Denver School for the Arts' A Club.
* When: 4 p.m. Saturday
* Where: Mercury Cafe, 2199 California St.
* Cost: $15-$20
* Information: teller.dpsk12.org
Root of pie
Your pies are the envy of your neighbors, all of whom have engaged in a variety of comical schemes to steal your recipes - only to be thwarted by your equally hilarious defenses (we sense a pilot for the CBN). The folks at Clear Creek History Park have heard the rumors, and want you to test your mettle at their opening day pie baking contest; or, at the very least, sample the wares of others and share your opinion. Kill time in between bites at the egg-toss, dress up in period garb and have a family photo taken or just explore the park's historic buildings. To submit a pie, call the history park.
* When: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday
* Where: Clear Creek History Park, corner of Arapahoe and 11th streets in downtown Golden
* Cost: $3, kids five and under free
* Information: clearcreekhistorypark.org; 303-278-3557
What, no Augustus Gloop?
The phrase "death by chocolate" is almost never meant literally - some rogue CIA outposts in Candyland notwithstanding - but after a visit to the Colorado Chocolate Festival, you'll think otherwise. This is no mere collection of candy bars: we're talking 100 vendors from across the country selling every permutation of the stuff, chocolate body painting, a Mother's Day gift market and, as you would naturally expect, an appearance by Denise Nickerson, aka Violet Beauregard from the original Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.
* When: 7-10 p.m. today; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday
* Where: Denver Merchandise Mart, Interstate 25 at 58th Avenue.
* Cost: $10 Friday night gala; $5 Saturday, kids 5-12 $2, under 5 free
* Information: chocolate-festival.org
The best laid plants
Look at that backyard of yours - so dry, so brown. So . . . plantless. Green things up around your old homestead with the help of the Denver Botanic Gardens' Plant Sale. Need some succulent succulents? Some lovely Lavender? Some extra-spiny cacti to thwart intruders (don't laugh, that works)? You'll find it all and more here, among the Gardens' 85,000 selections for sale. But we recommend you come early - you aren't the only one needing a chlorophyll fix.
* When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. today; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday
* Where: Denver Botanic Gardens, 1005 York St.
* Cost: Free
* Information: 720-865-3500
One good thing from Detroit
The subject of "cover bands that aren't really cover bands" came up a few weeks back in connection with the Dark Star Orchestra, and now we have one more to add to the list: the Detroit Cobras. Unlike the DSO, though, the Cobras don't wear their influence(s) like iron-on patches; they reinterpret classic R&B and soul tunes with a punk rock edge and plenty of sneer, but the sound is undeniably theirs - you'd have to be pretty caught up on the Stax catalog to even hope to ID the song from their version. So, kind of the DSO's exact opposite . . . and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
* When: 9 p.m. tonight
* Where: The Falcon, 3295 S. Broadway
* Cost: $12-$14
* Information: falconbowl.com
