Jefferson County teachers will get 2.7 percent cost-of-living increases effective Sept. 1 under a tentative contract with the school district.

The agreement also calls for the district to provide $1.4 million in workload relief for teachers. Each Jeffco school will receive $10,000 to hire substitutes or paraprofessionals to help regular teachers.

Jefferson County Eduction Association spokesman Dexter Meyer said the money might be used, for example, to hire a substitute to lead a class while the regular teacher tests students or analyzes test data used to diagnose learning problems.

The school district is considering a mill levy vote in the fall. If it passes, teachers would get additional half-percent salary hikes.

The salary increase is in addition to regular salary increases teachers receive for years of service or additional education.

Increases for longevity range from a half-percent to 3 percent. The increases for completing college courses range from 3 percent to 6 percent.

The new compensation rate is an amendment to a work contract that extends through 2011. Compensation will be renegotiated each year of the contract.

Ballots have gone out to teachers. A formal announcement of the vote will probably be made May 20, Meyer said.
