One person died apparently after being thrown by an explosion Wednesday night in Grand County that destroyed four mobile homes.
The fire quickly spread to three nearby mobile homes.
The victim, who was not identified, was not found until 1:28 p.m. Thursday.
According to Grand County coroner Brenda Bock, the victim was blown 120 feet by the blast, landing behind an unoccupied residence, out of sight of firefighters and investigators.
Thursday, investigators from the coroner's office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Grand County Sheriff's office searched through the ruins of the four destroyed homes for victims and evidence.
The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
Wednesday, firefighters from three agencies extinguished the fire six miles north of Granby on U.S. 34 in the Lake Granby area, Grand County Undersheriff Walt Eldridge said. The call came at 8:03 p.m.
"I live three miles from there and I heard the bang," Grand County Sheriff's Lt. Jim Campbell said. "I turned around and saw the mushroom cloud."
Besides the darkness, there was a mix of rain and snow, so investigators weren't able to determine if anyone might have been in the homes at the time of the explosion, Campbell said.

Hey holekeeper, so far, so good!
But there could have been some innocent victims in this case.

another meth lab explosion, no doubt.
come on, a "mushroom cloud"? was this a nuclear explosion?
maybe just a large meth lab, but I seriously doubt there was a mushroom cloud.
how do I know? Demolitions training.

airborne,
Maybe to a Grand County Sheriff it was a mushroom cloud, even in the dark, rain, and snow.

Is it just me.. or are mobile homes just disaster magnets?

I wish I could argue your point, Heidi.. but all the scares and missing parts would have to agree with you! (PS, NEVER lived in a trailer park!)
FYI... you can get a cool mushroom could with diesel in a bucket. But, not real hard to get a cool one with house hold items, either. Or so I was told by someone... win k wink

Go for it MarineGrunt, as long as you don't hurt anyone else! Let me know when you are going to do it so I can watch.

I live 4 miles down the road, but directly across the lake from those trailers. The first explosion knocked me off my feet and knocked my son into the backseat of the car he was cleaning out. My daughter called in the 911 at 7:35 (can't say why the undersheriff doesn't have it right) the fire dept was rolling at 7:38. The blast shook our house to the point I thought something big had hit it. When I got outside (within seconds) the flames were shooting straight up about 20 ft. and the top had rolling very dark smoke. Three more explosions followed within the next 20 minutes, but they were just mildly felt. The blaze was enormous and it took three depts until midnight to get it fully under control.

Whoa, I once lived about 20 miles from a fertilizer plant when there was an explosion there. It shook my house and I thought that my roof caved in or my furnace blew up.
This definitely sounds like a chemical explosion. So it was the flames the sheriff saw, not a mushroom cloud.
