MicroSat Systems in Jefferson County is a key member of a team that landed a $117 million contract to build 18 small satellites for a New Jersey company.
The deal is expected to lead to additional hiring at MicroSat, which employs 48. The company also expects to open new facilities.
"We're kind of bursting at the seams with our current facility," said Todd Mosher, director of advanced systems at MicroSat.
He added it was too early for the company to know how many additional employees it will require.
The deal came about after MicroSat's parent company, Nevada-based Sierra Nevada Corp., won a contract from New Jersey-based satellite-communications company Orbcomm Inc.
That contract calls for the construction of a constellation of 18 satellites. Orbcomm has the option to purchase an additional 30 satellites.
MicroSat will design and build the satellites.
Other members of the Sierra Nevada Corp. team are Boeing Intelligence and Security Systems and ITT Space Systems.
