Telluride-based Helitrax received a five-year special-use permit to operate its heliskiing operation for up to 300 days a year in southwestern Colorado.
The Bureau of Land Management issued its decision on the permit after conducting an environmental assessment, calling it a "reasonable compromise."
At the end of five years, the agency said said it would re-evaluate whether to consider granting Helitrax a 10-year permit and more service days. The permit area includes about 13,600 acres of public and private lands in the Silverton area.
