Infielder Juan Castro, released by Cincinnati, has agreed to terms with the Rockies, and will initially report to Triple-A Colorado Springs to get some regular at-bats. Castro had appeared in only seven games with the Reds this season and was 0-for-10 with a walk.
Castro became attractive to the Rockies when they lost shortstop Troy Tulowitzki until possibly the All-Star Break because of a torn tendon in his left quadriceps. With Tulowitzki sidelined, Clint Barmes will take over at second base, and Omar Quintanilla and Jeff Baker figure to see time at second base, adding the need for a veteran utility infielder.
The Dodgers, Padres and Orioles also had interest in Castro.
