I think the headline "Visa cap leaves ski resorts short-staffed" (March 15, Wall Street West) was misleading. The visa cap (which I oppose, by the way) has not left the resorts short-staffed. The resorts have left themselves short-staffed because they are unwilling to pay enough to attract the number of workers they need. They could solve their problem overnight if they wanted to.

The resorts need to pay more if only to offset the high costs of living in the area. Many of those who work in Aspen can't afford to eat there or live there.
The resorts might have to pay more just to allow workers to survive. Many workers want more than survival and there are jobs in other places that pay less money but allow the worker to do more because the cost of living in the resorts is too high for many.
Maybe now some will believe that while parts of the economy are poor, the major parts like jobs are doing well. If jobs were so scarce, people would take any job available. Unemployment is down and jobs are up.
I would hope that this means the resorts are afraid the laws against illegals would be enforced and the fines would be imposed. Can you imagine the message that would be sent by shutting down a ski area for a month in the middle of winter? They might be thinking about that.

In a market economy, there can be no such thing as a "shortage." There can be a reluctance to pay market rates though, and that is what we are seeing here. People in Vail didn't get rich by paying up - look for them to seek government assistance (more visas, section 8 support for workers, food stamps for wsorkers, "free" buses to remote trailer parks for workers, etc.)

Right on, Sheik. Evidently, some business people in Vail think a "market economy" means that they have a God-given right to charge exorbitant prices while paying starvation wages, and if this scheme doesn't always work, it must be the fault of Liberals, labor unions, or government regulation.

Same redundant P R O P A G A N D A--
Two things are apparent: one those in the hiring are either former recipients of A M N E S T Y or were ancwhore babies or the person is just someone whom expects the diminising USA citizen-worker taxpayer to foot the bill for their "subsidized ILLEGALs" to our own bankrupt demise.
We, the people are either cutting our own throats or are having them cut: either way and that includes being replaced by the worlds overpopulation--
While each generation is being systematically sacrificed on foreign soil for OPEN BORDERS USA CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS--predominanatly THE RACE continued via AMNESTY-achwhore babies.
Ain't life great-especially when you are a 3rd class citizen in your own nation on your own soil!

If the resorts were to pay more (significantly more to attract workers to these remote expensive places), then skiers would pay more. But for some, better that than having to sully our pristine existence with any of "those" people darker than us.
