Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer will appear today in Denver with John McCain, the GOP presidential candidate that he indirectly dissed a year ago on a local TV show.

Schaffer said he disagreed with some GOP presidential candidates' views, and had to consider the possibility of running for the U.S. Senate "in parallel with somebody whose views on America I find somewhat destructive."

Schaffer refused to name names, but told host Aaron Harber during the February 2007 show that he could not "campaign boldly and proudly in tandem with anybody who thought that severely restricting the First Amendment rights to free speech is a good idea."

"That would have to be John McCain," Harber said, because McCain sponsored campaign finance legislation that critics say restricts free speech.

Schaffer did not contradict Harber.

Yet, Schaffer and McCain will be side by side today.

Why the change of heart?

"The Republican Party has settled on a nominee for president, and that nominee stands in stark contrast to either Democrat on the fundamental issues of national security and fiscal responsibility," said Dick Wadhams, Schaffer's campaign manager and chairman of the state GOP.

"Bob Schaffer enthusiastically supports John McCain for president ..."

Democrats pounced on Schaffer's comments.

"For Bob Schaffer to attack John McCain, a rock-ribbed, conservative Republican, tells Coloradans everything about how extreme and out of touch he really is, even with conservative Coloradans," said Lauren Rose, spokeswoman for the Colorado Democratic Party.

Schaffer, a former congressman, faces U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, in November. They are vying for the seat held by Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Loveland, who is stepping down.

"I expect John McCain finds it pretty 'destructive' that Bob Schaffer consistently turned his back on veterans," said Udall's spokeswoman, Taylor West. "That should be one awkward stage (today)."

McCain's fund-raiser, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will be held at The Petroleum Club at the Denver Athletic Club. A liberal group on Wednesday unveiled an 8-foot golden oil rig outside the Denver Athletic Club with the sign "Is McCain for Sale?"

Michael Huttner, executive director of ProgressNow, noted that some of the event hosts have ties to the oil-and-gas industry. Huttner said McCain has voted on tax breaks for the industry at the same time he accepted its campaign donations.

A number of prominent Colorado Republicans have signed on as hosts or co-chairs for the event. They include Allard former Gov. Bill Owens, and former CU President Hank Brown.

patriotism and personal attacks... the last refuge of tyrants. ~ Ben Franklin

Look up "Froward" in the dictionary grunt, you should have learned how to use one in 1st grade.

As much as the "republikans" have wiped their "arse" with the U.S. Constitution... one would think you would be as pissed off as I am.

LOL... your so filled with blind hate.. you can't see that other are pissed off too! Just because I do not claim a party.. doesn't mean I am not pissed!

I know Repub's that are pissed too! Shut up for a little while and you will hear the discourse throughout the population. Not just from your beloved side...

Froward:
1)Stubbornly contrary and disobedient; obstinate.
2)Habitually disposed to disobedience and opposition; perverse
OK, your right. Just as I remember it!

Look forward to much more of this. Yesterday it was Udall trying very hard to straddle the fence on gun regulation, today it is Schaffer supporting McCain who he once called "destructive". It is going to be hard to get a straight answer out of either of these guys. Don't you love election years.

Thank you marine,

I am hell bent on focusing my anger at those, who have screwed our country, our people and our Liberty. Just now that happens to be Republicans. Blindly voting party line just as the republicans insist upon is what has caused this mess.

I for one will stand and defend our Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic.

Just now it is Republicans that are in fact those Domestic enemies.

It's Republican's today, Democrats yesterday, and so on and so on!
Blind voting is a BIG issue. An even bigger issue is the fact that both parties have made it impossible for a 3rd party to gain ground!
Both parties have put up in the situation...

It's a big shizer sandwich and we all have to take a bite!

AGAIN... edit button!!!

"Both parties are to blame! Claiming one side does not clear ANYONE from anything!"
OK, That sounds better!!!

Posted by Froward69 on March 27, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ok marinegrunt wrap your head around why there is a "69" at the end of "Froward".

I agree Both partys are to blame.

Democrats who want to fund things like; Education, Roads, Health care.

Republicans who would like to dismantle ALL funding of such essentials. Whilst giving Tax breaks to the wealthy, and corporate welfare to Businesses that in turn move off shore to avoid returning any of that plunder.

Posted by MarineGrunt on March 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

LOL... 69 is fun if she ain't too tall!

OK, but when has a company going out of business or a poor man ever employed more people? Paid taxes? Started a business?
If you don't keep jobs with tax cuts here and there... they go away!
YES... the corps SHOULD treat employees better and be better stewards. But BOTH parties have to change to rules to do that... not just one!

Republicans say government is wasteful and ineffective and when elected they prove it. I thought Bob Schaffer had become a non-candidate when his ties to the right wing "Patriot" hate groups became public. I guess the GOP is digging pretty deep in the toilet for candidates this year. I would be ashamed to have Bob Schaffer as a representative no matter what party he was in. The FBI has hinted pretty hard that the anti Semite ideals may have had these groups working together with the Islamic terrorists for reconnaissance and with the Oklahoma City Bombing perpetrators. I should look back at the old papers to see what his issue was. He sure fell off the radar for a while and it wasn’t just his term limit pledge the GOP will defend him with. I think it may have to do with the hate group up in La Porte and Bob Schaffer dealings with the leader of this known “Christian Identity”/”Patriot” hate group. Anyway I think it might benefit McCain if Bob Schaffer didn’t support him.

Early yesterday morning this was a mundane little three paragraph article with little information, and not a lot of point.

I posted a single word comment "So?"

That must have hit home because a lot more meat got added, enough that my comment is made to look as though it is a comment on the new content. I'd have never written "So?" to the article as it now stands for any number of reasons.

It is very unethical to make these kinds of significant changes and leave the comments that were made on the original article. If you are going to change an article significantly, please put a big note between the old comments and the new.
