TUCSON -- The Rockies officially released second baseman Brian Giles from his minor league contract on Wednesday, which set the stage for him to sign with the Dodgers. Giles was told on Sunday that he would not make the Rockies, and told the team he would not report to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The Rockies also announced on Wednesday that catcher Humberto Cota was reassigned to the minor-league camp, and the Rockies optioned outfielder Seth Smith, third baseman Ian Stewart, and shortstop Omar Quintanilla to the minor leagues.

Cota was brought in during the weekend to provide depth at Colorado Springs after Mike Rose was released. Rose was upset that he did not get more playing time in the big-league camp, and balked at reporting to the minor leagues.

The Rockies also have brought Fernando Seguignol into their minor league camp. The first baseman originally signed with the Yankees, and in April of 1995, at the age of 19, was traded to Montreal for reliever John Wetteland. A native of Panama, Seguignol played in the big leagues with the Expos and has played in Taiwan and Japan.
