The plea: 'It's supposed to go to Carmelo Anthony's son's birthday'

The chef landed in jail, but the birthday cake was paroled in time to save the party that Denver Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony threw for his son this month.

Littleton police say they stopped Daniel Paul Young, 46, on the afternoon of March 15 on South Santa Fe Drive when he ran a stop sign. He had a big cake in his car.

When officers found that he had a suspended license, no proof of insurance and that records indicated he was behind on child support, they took Young to Arapahoe County Jail.

Young was cooperative, but made just one request, police spokesman Michael Broadhead said.

"He said, 'Can I have someone come by and pick up the cake?' " Broadhead said. " 'It's supposed to go to Carmelo Anthony's son's birthday.'

"The officer said, 'sure.' " Someone made a phone call, a friend stopped by "and we released the cake to the guy," Broadhead said.

Young was released on $1,000 bond the next day.

Tuesday, Young pointed out that he was stopped for a minor traffic infraction. "I was probably more concerned about the cake than the stop sign," he said.

Young says the suspended license issue has been taken care of and contends that the other charges stem from records errors in Colorado and Michigan.

"It was a pretty traumatizing experience for me," he said.

Still, when he realized that he wouldn't make it to the party in time, "I took steps to make sure" that the cake got to its destination.

Young has been credited with improving Anthony's diet.

He has prepared foods that fit nicely into Baltimore-reared Anthony's routine, just lower-fat higher-protein versions of crab cakes, stuffed chicken breasts and the like.

The goal is to keep Anthony at about 8 percent body fat as he grinds through the long basketball season.

A Denver Nuggets spokesman, Eric Sebastian, declined to comment, saying the incident had nothing to do with the Nuggets.

Kiyan, Anthony's son with fiancee LaLa Vasquez, was born March 7, 2007.

What a real role model,no insurance and no license and bet the car was not even registered either.I am sick of people who expect me to pay for their mistakes. As a tax payer if you can't afford to pay for your kids don't have them.To all those single women who keep having babies to support themselves stop.Because many of us don't want to pay for your lifestyle.I feel if you have a kid and can not afford to do it then why should I pay for it.It is your problem you pay for it.Also don't expect the rest of us to jump for joy over your little mistake.I think it is time to stop paying for all the welfare wilma's and betty's of the world. Also I get tired of seeing people on welfare eating steaks and getting the best cuts of meats. While I work and have to eat hamburger. What is fair about that. You are a drain on society and we need to stop supporting you sorry lazy poor excuse for a human being.I know this sounds harsh but it is the truth when they come in a and spend 500 dollars at a time and pay for it with a welfare card and smile all the while doing it is just wrong. If you are on welfare then you should be ashamed of youself for not pulling your own weight. To all the dead beat dads out there keep it in your pants your the problem not the solution.

unhappymike44, all your rant over a suspended license? Whew, do you feel better now?

However, I agree. ;-) If the Dems get in, the unwed birth Mom will be rewarded even more.

But this story is about a rescued cake. As doublechucky might say, eat more cake burgers.

let me get this straight, the guy had his license suspended for, among other things, non payment of child support, yet he was delivering a cake to another mans child on his birthday. Seems to me, he should be more worried about the happiness of his OWN children. Like driving without a license to drop off some child support to his kids. Loser

happy mike! WOW, are you totally misinformed, and what the hell did this story have to do with all the welfare mamas, eating steak with a happy face? Let me tell you a story. I had a TERRIFIC job, for 10 years, made excellent money, oh yeah, i had a husband too. Lost it all, divorce and a company downsizing, with 2 children, I was forced to EUREKA go on welfare, something I REALLY wanted to do. NOT!!!. Anyway, I was on the great welfare for 2 years, as i could not find a job. I went to school to further my education, which wasn't easy because i made a "mistake" and was a single mother now, (the father bailed on the marriage and the kids), i was forced to survive, yes survive off of a whopping $365.00 a month welfare, and 399.00 in food stamps, and as I recall I never ate steak, in fact i had to make a pound of hamburger last for 2 meals.
Needless to say I do not agree with your sarcasm nor do i appreciate your assumptions of the luxury of welfare.

biotch, you are to be commended. I do not think mike was talking about you. He is talking about unwed mothers on welfare who choose to have another baby and another to get more dole. Our socialist society continues to reward these mothers. My wife has sister in Ohio whose husband is second generation welfare and works for cash that he does not claim. That is what ain't right about our system. You obviously do not fall into that category. Congratulations on your determination. I support help for people like you. Well done!

So what flavor was the cake? Was it an ice cream cake? They are missing vital information from this story.

happymike44, your bitterness is going to destroy your health. You are all worked up over someone who has nothing to do with you? Who says he's a role model? I've never heard of him, he's not a role model to me or my kids! I'm sorry he has let you down so! As for the rest of your dense rant, welfare mothers can't afford steak, generally. You see, they don't get that much money. I would MUCH rather my tax dollars support their children then pay to kill innocent children in other countries, the BILLIONS we pay for an unjust idiotic war is FAR more than the drop in the bucket we pay out to welfare. Civilized countries take care of their people, not kill people in other countries for their resources.

I am so happy that the kid wont have to go with out a cake on his birthday. I was so worried about this I couldnt sleep. I wonder if the boys parents might consider getting married now? more than likely not as it puts to much pressure on them and would make responsibility for the child put on both of them.

fefe, your caps are stuck on. Oh, you did that on purpose? That must make your point more valid. Sorry.

Posted by LamboMan on March 26, 2008 at 11:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

So how does a column about a birthday cake turn into a means to rant about a war? Nice reach folks. Hope you feel better now. UGH!!

Posted by temurlan on March 26, 2008 at 12:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Only in Boulder...I am so sick of hearing...oh, wait. Littleton? Nevermind.

Posted by fefe on March 26, 2008 at 12:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

First to GWM yes my caps were on to make my point don't worry your forgiven. And Lamboman if you are following all the comments you would know its not only about the dumb cake, but yeah we do feel better so thanks for your concern. And last but not lease Temyrlan what's up with your comment nevermind is right ha ha have a good life fellow humans . peace fefe

Posted by LamboMan on March 26, 2008 at 2:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, fefe, I did read ALL (see, I can capitalize too) of the comments. And once again, after reading the column word for word I neglected to read the word "war" even one single time. Therefore, any comments made to any war would have absolutely NO (there are those darn capitals again. I guess I must really be trying to make a point, eh?) relevance to the column.

BTW, why do you state "WE do feel better" in your reply? Who else are you speaking for? Are you married to Barron or something? : )

I love cake. Yum, yum! I'm so glad it didn't get jailed either otherwise I would have broken down in tears.

Fluffer - if you cried over that you'd get a sausage mcMuffin stuffed in your jailhouse wallet.

LamboPerson?, you said:

"Therefore, any comments made to any war would have absolutely NO (there are those darn capitals again. I guess I must really be trying to make a point, eh?) relevance to the column."

Could you please tell us what the f you are talking about?

Daaaaaaaaamage...did we all forget our doses of Xanax this morning? All this anger and vileness over a cake, an idiot with a suspended license, and a couple that most of us wouldn't know if they walked by us on the street. Ease up, people, your blood pressure(s) will thank you.

Posted by Fluffer on March 26, 2008 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That wasn't very nice mister bocker. I simply wanted to express my joy of cake and you turn into this. No wonder why I don't post here much. Everyone is so mean!

Posted by Heidi on March 26, 2008 at 4:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is too funny. When I started reading the article, I assumed all of the subsequent comments would have something to do with a rich guy's kid's birthday and who cares if a rich kid got a cake or not. Then I read on and found out it was just an infant so the kid wouldn't even know the difference. Of course it took several different tangents!
And fluffer, what is wrong with a sausage McMuffin?

Posted by GWM on March 26, 2008 at 4:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Heidi, do you know what a fluffer is? Don't answer. He has to be a jerk. Let him (oh my could it be a him) her go away.

Posted by Fluffer on March 26, 2008 at 5:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Heidi doesn't need to know what a fluffer is since she seems sweet and innocent. As for the Sausage, I'm always open minded to anything.

Posted by Heidi on March 26, 2008 at 6:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You're right, I am sweet and innocent. I have no idea what you are talking about. But the sausage in the McMuffin is a "Patty"

i was going to comment, but the way all this turned out , i'll remind myself that it takes all kind to make this world

I am not against welfare,I am against women who are able bodied.Coming into where I work and buying steak. While I have to work on my feet all day to pay for hamburger. To all those women who have made something of themselves, while on welfare you are the exception.I hear women who brag that I am pregnant with my 5th baby and I don't know who the father is.They are abusing the system.Men like this chef are reasons we pay so much taxes for welfare. He drives without insurance which puts people at risk with a uninsured motorist.I was hit twice and both times they had no insurance.I had to foot the bill in the factor the first time totaled my car.Which I had to work sixty hours a week to pay for.The second time the woman who hit me was uninsured and refused to pay any repairs.I am pointing out these people present a danger to all of us as a community. That is pretty much how I see it another scofflaw disobeying the law.Hope you don't get hit by him anytime soon because if he won't pay for insurance odds are he won't pay to repair your car.The sheriff never issued the woman who hit me a ticket or impounded her car for no licence or registration.Wow what lucky day for her,and when I did not have the money to pay myself. My insurance doubled from 150.00 a month to 300.00 a month how lucky for me she hit me.I am a happy person but I am a realist sorry.By the way I am glad he was breaking the law,but the story had a happy ending.Because I hate to think what might have happened had that little boy not had his birthday cake.To the chef prove me a liar get insurance and registration and your child support and be a example to other men who might be cheating the taxpayers out of their hard earned dollars. Also I have no qualms for a person to be on welfare to learn a job. What I am complaining about is people who are on the system. That started with the grandparents and now includes the parents and now the grandchildren.
