Linda Relyea, 45, of Alamosa, says her 5-year-old son Joshua Medina was one of the first reported salmonella cases. Her story:

"It started a week ago Friday. He had a stomach ache about noon, but it wasn't until later that evening he started running a temperature. He started going to the bathroom every two hours with really bad cramps. I thought it was the stomach flu. Saturday night at 3 a.m. it was going on over 24 hours. Joshua was just yelling, 'Ow! Ow!'. I was exhausted and told him, 'The neighbors are going to call the police and think we're beating you.' By Sunday morning, he was going (to the bathroom) every 20 or 30 minutes. That's when I really started thinking it was giardia - only we hadn't been camping. We took him to the ER, they took a stool sample and said they found white blood cells and prescribed an antibiotic. By Monday, he was feeling a lot better. He went back to preschool Wednesday."
