A Media Welcoming Party at Six Flags Elitch Gardens will kick off the Democratic National Convention.
The event was announced at a news conference Thursday at Elitch's featuring Elbra Wedgeworth, who leads the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee, and Mayor John Hickenlooper.
Joining in the announcement was Harry Whipple, president of the Denver Newspaper Agency, which manages the business operations of the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post, premier sponsors of the event.
"With over 15,000 members of the media covering the convention, there has never been a larger spotlight on our city, and we want to make sure that spotlight shines bright and captures all the vitality that Denver has to offer," Whipple said.
Joe Martinez, the amusement park's manager, also spoke at the event and noted that the original Elitch's played a role in the 1908 Democratic National Convention, which also was held in Denver.
"In 2008, a century later, Elitch Gardens theme park is excited to have the opportunity to once again make Denver proud," Martinez said.
Molson Coors and Vail Resorts are helping sponsor the event.
