A national study released today finds Colorado near the bottom of states that provide public preschool in the percentage of children served and in funding.
The report by the National Institute for Early Education Research ranks Colorado 36th in the percentage of 4-year-olds enrolled in preschool and 11th in the percentage of 3-year-olds.
The state is 36th in per-pupil expenditures for pre-schoolers.
However, the report by the New Jersey-based institute was based on data for the 2006-07 school year.
Legislation passed near the end of that year dramatically increased the number of children served in public preschools. Under the act, enrollment will increase from 14,360 students in 2006-07 to 19,860 in the 2008-09 school year, a 38.3 percent jump.
The report ranked Colorado among 38 states that provide preschool, excluding the 12 states that have no programs.
