A documentary by a Denver-based film company took two top awards Tuesday night at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
They Killed Sister Dorothy, a film about the murder of Dorothy Stang, a 73-year-old nun found shot to death in Brazil, won both the grand jury and audience prizes for documentaries.
"We're utterly, utterly delighted," said director Daniel Junge, who accepted the awards with producer Henry Ansbacher.
The film, which premiered in Austin, is the third feature- length documentary by the LoDo-based nonprofit The Just Media Fund.
"Hopefully, it's a testament not only to our work, but to the subject matter of the film," Junge added.
Stang, an Ohio native who advocated for the rural poor and the rain forest, was found shot to death on a road in 2005. A rancher was later convicted of hiring the two men who killed her.
