Bruce Benson will take over Monday as president of the University of Colorado. The Denver oilman replaces Hank Brown, who steps down today.

Benson, 69, will be paid $378,000 a year, the same salary as Brown. He also will recieve a $49,500 housing allowance since he will use his home for entertaining. Brown received $47,000.

Benson, like Brown, will not receive a travel allowance, but will charge his job-related miles to the university. He will receive the standard CU health insurance policy.

Benson will be allowed to remain on three outside boards of directors, provided they do not present a conflict of interest with his CU duties and subject to approval by the regents. He must take leave to attend board meetings.

Benson was selected by the regents on Feb. 20. Board members noted his experience as a fundraiser and his wide range of contacts statewide.

Benson was on the job almost immediately after the regents' vote, meeting with faculty members and legislative leaders.

To AirBailey - I hope you'd be happy that under your proposal CU would be the worst public institution in the country, not just in Colorado. If the faculty leave, and they're the ones who bring in millions of dollars in grants that pay their salaries, you'll be the one paying for it with either higher taxes to support the university or privatizing it, which means the tuition triples and you won't be able to afford it. Nice idea.
