University of Colorado biofuels researchers today won a million-dollar grant from two federal agencies as part of an $18.4 million package announced by the government.
The CU grant is one of 21 biomass research and development, and demonstration projects at companies and universities across the country to be funded by the departments of agriculture and energy over three years. Its purpose is "to develop rapid solar-thermal chemical reactor systems for conversion of biomass to synthesis gas."
Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer and Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman made the announcement at the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference 2008.
"Funding new technologies will help make biofuels competitive with fossil fuels in the commercial market, putting America on the path of reducing its dependence on foreign oil," Schafer said.
The projects will be paid for through the Biomass Research and Development Initiative, a joint USDA-DOE effort established in 2000 to develop the next generation of clean, biobased technologies.
