The Rocky Mountain News won the general excellence award in the annual journalism competition conducted by the Colorado Press Association.
In ceremonies held Saturday in Denver, the Rocky also received the prestigious best of show - editorial prize for "Border Street," a yearlong series by metro columnist Tina Griego that examined the impact of illegal immigration along a small city street.
The Rocky was declared sweepstakes winner for photo and design, in addition to garnering the general excellence award. The paper won 12 first-place awards and 44 total awards for 2007.
The Denver Post tallied 14 first-place finishes, including public service and a sweepstakes award for editorial, and 32 total awards. The Gazette of Colorado Springs captured two first-place finishes and 10 total awards, also in the large newspaper category.
Among the Rocky's first-place awards was that for best series, accorded to Kevin Vaughan for his work on "The Crossing," which dramatically depicted how a 1961 Colorado train-school bus tragedy has reverberated through the decades.
Other Rocky top winners were Jim Sheeler for best feature story; Chris Tomasson, Dave Krieger and Clay Latimer for best sports event story; the Rocky staff for best business story and best deadline news reporting; Griego for best sustained coverage; Ahmad Terry for best news photograph; Darin McGregor for best feature photograph; Barry Gutierrez for best sports photo; Chris Schneider for best photo essay; and Julie Lovell and Christine Birch for best feature page design.

Oh, and the Post won the general excellence award in the Colorado AP contest, and the sweepstakes award.
But oh yeah, that's the contest the Rocky "dominated" too.

As David Simon so correctly says, the only time papers cover things truly exhaustively anymore is when they win a prize in some contrived contest. The prize culture was never best exposed than the Rocky's award for that ridiculous bus crash series of stories, that was longer than Gone with the Wind and bored every single reader silly by the 12th chapter or so.
