The Rocky won 15 first-place awards and 45 total awards, far outstripping other newspapers in its circulation class, in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters competition announced Friday night in Denver.
Included in the Rocky's haul were top honors in the prestigious public service category and the singular "best of show" award, designating the best work of journalism in Colorado across all circulation categories.
In ceremonies at the Brown Palace Hotel, The Denver Post registered 10 first-place scores, including general excellence, and 25 total awards.
The Gazette of Colorado Springs also had a first-place finish.
The public service honor went to Rocky reporters Laura Frank and Ann Imse, whose worked exposed how the federal government is turning its back on former nuclear workers at Rocky Flats, many of whom are ill and dying without recompense from the program approved by Congress to address their needs.
Best-of-show honors went to Rocky photographer Chris Schneider for his spectacular portrayal of "The Crossing," a 34-part series written by reporter Kevin Vaughan.
The series dramatically demonstrated how the tragedy of a 1961 train-school bus accident has reverberated through the decades.
The Rocky's first-place finishes also included awards for best business story, best continuing photo coverage, best editorial, best feature photo, best feature story, best general news photo, best headline writing, best news column, best photo illustration, best portrait/personality photo, best sports photo, best spot news photo and best spot news story.
The Rocky swept first, second and honorable mention in six categories, including editorial writing and five photo competitions.
The Post won three first-place awards for its "Trashing the Truth" series, which showed how the disposal or destruction of DNA evidence thwarts justice in criminal cases.
In the competitions among newspapers in smaller circulation categories, the Cortez Journal and Longmont Times-Call won for general excellence.
The Aurora Daily Sentinel and the Greeley Tribune were honored for public service among smaller papers.

How does a newspaper "dominate" the awards when it didn't win the General Excellenced award, which is the best award to win for a newspaper? Also, the Post's story today said it had 24 first-place awards, not 10, as you report. So, who's right?
Thank you for your Pravda-style report, Rocky Mountain News.

I guess in John Temple's world, that's "domination" by his paper.
LOL.
I guess we also won't be seeing Temple be able to strip "Judged Colorado's Best Newspaper" across the top of his paper again this year, because his paper didn't win the General Excellence award. But, oh yeah, the RMN "dominated" the contests.
LOLOLOLOL!
