Numbers Game

3 National League teams the Rockies have yet to play this season: Florida, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The Marlins will be at Coors Field for a four-game series beginning Thursday. The Rockies play the Pirates from July 17-20 and the Reds from July 25-27.

He Said It

"We have to find ways to make sure no one is forgotten. We don't have a golden lineup to throw out like that."

Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager, on giving Omar Quintanilla a start at second base in place of Clint Barmes.

Several clubs with scouts following the Rockies say indications they have been given are Colorado will decide at the All-Star break whether to deal players. And there are several players on the Rockies that teams are interested in.

The Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Rays, Cubs and Cardinals are known to have interest in left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes.

An Oakland source says Fuentes is not on the Athletics' wish list, but they would kick the tires on Matt Holliday but more likely would be involved in discussions for Willy Taveras.

Holliday has also has drawn interest from St. Louis, Tampa Bay, the Angels, Dodgers and Kansas City.

Etc.

Kevin Kouzmanoff, who grew up in Evergreen, singled in a run in the third and hit a home run to lead off the five-run sixth, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games. . . . Chase Headley, who grew up in Fountain, singled and scored in the sixth. He has a hit in 11 of 13 games since being called up. . . . The Rockies suffered their third losing month in three months this season, but their 12 wins in June were the most of any month. . . . Taveras is one of five National League regulars who has not grounded into a double play this year, joining Mike Fontenot of the Cubs, Kazuo Matsui of the Astros, Corey Patterson of the Reds and Jayson Werth of the Phillies. . . . Holliday's .408 average in interleague play was tops in the majors. . . . . . . Brad Hawpe, who hit fourth for the third time Monday, is the fifth player to hit cleanup this year.

I have serious issues about dealing Holliday. A power hitter that has a high average and speed is RARE. Too bad Helton is eating up so much salary to watch third strikes.
Trade Atkins, Fuentes, Taveras, etc. Keep Holliday.

Give a guy a multi-million pay raise and it goes straight to his head. These guys were better when they were low budget. Now, with large paychecks, they are sufficiently demotivated to excel.

Enough is enough, it is well past time to blow up this team and build something better. Do the math, Hillary had a better chance at catching Barack! No one should be off limits, but we should explore every opportunity to resign Holliday. We don't need to be tied up with another Helton like deal but if both sides are willing they could say put together a 5 to 7 year front loaded deal with alternating out clauses every year after the third year or fourth year. Tulo may one day be great but Matt Holliday is the only player on the squad worthy of building a team around. The Rockies must act now or lose later.

This team has been trading off talent each year of non-performance looking for the magic bullet. And, what has this gotten us. Another year of non-performance and more trade-offs. Last year happened not by luck but by a cause this team hasn't yet identified. There is a core problem with the Rockies - find it, fix it, and prosper.

I think it is time to trade Todd and use any savings to sign Holiday to a long term contract. We have plenty of members who can cover 1st base now. Holiday keeps fans coming to the game and to trade him would be just plain stupid unless he has said there is no way he will sign and stay in Colorado.
Also think the days of Hurdle are short. He will manage the NL in the all-star game and then the pressure will be on to release him.

I agree mostly with RockiesWin. I would keep Baker and let him play regularly. Barmes is way to hot/cold. Whatever they do, I really hope they keep Holliday. Knowing O'Dowd, we would get a middle reliever and a low-A prospect for him. Fuentes is a good pitcher, but not mentally tough enough to be a consistent closer. I would have Buchholz close, have Manny set-up, and bring up Weathers to pitch the 7th until next year.

They need to get rid of O'Dowd and bring in a GM who knows how to built a team without blowing them up every stinking season.

The rockies need to get rid of Fuentes he's not as good as he thinks that he is. Everytime that he comes in everyone has to be sitting on there hands wondering if he can get the job done. He isn't a closer doesn't have the mentality for that position. Middle relief might suit him better. He doesn't handle pressure well. Its time to shop Mr. Holliday around. Hate to do it but he's gonna be out of the Rockies payscale at the end of this extension. 4 for 1 trade would be in order for that. (2 pitchers, 1 position player, and 1 prospect). I would consider trading Jimenez and corpas both for prospects. Neither of them can pitch here. The rockies have some spots that need to be addressed. Lead off hitter has been horrible this year, haven't gotten much if anything production wise from 2nd base either. The starting pitching next to Cook has been horrible. Francis is way to soft spoken and doesn't have the demeaner to be the ace of the staff. Come on Hurdle to have any idea what your doing as the manager. Probably not and it shows in your record at all level's. Get a manager in here that nows what talent looks like and has a clue on how to coach it. Hurdle has been lost and got lucky last year. NL West champions that are so far out of first place they can't even see it.
