Regional scene: Vail's Middaugh wins XTERRA East title

Vail athlete Josiah Middaugh won the XTERRA East Championships Sunday in Richmond, Va., becoming the first American since Michael Tobin in 2000 to win the men's event.
The race consisted of a 0.7- mile swim in the James River, an 18-mile mountain bike race over James River Park System trails and a 6.2-mile trail run.
Middaugh passed South African Dan Hugo with less than a mile to go in the run and crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 2 minutes, 51 seconds. Hugo finished 24 seconds behind.
Conrad Stoltz, winner of the previous three East Championship titles, had more than a minute lead halfway through the bike race before his back tire went flat.
Melanie McQuaid of Victoria, British Columbia, a three-time XTERRA world champion, won the women's event.
AMES IN FRONT Boulder runner Andy Ames won the feature 14.3-mile men's race in Joe Colton's Off Road Adventure Run on Sunday in Rollinsville, finishing in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 7 seconds. Boulder resident Susan Nuzum won the women's race in 1:42.55.
Dave Mackey (Boulder, men's 10-mile), Kim McConnell (Erie, women's 10-mile), Peter Lehman (Lafayette, men's 10-kilometer), Priscilla Courtney (Boulder, women's 10K), Erik Davidson (Westminster, men's 5K) and Laura Bruess (Boulder, women's 5K) also won races.
* Longmont runner Eric Hirman won the Longmont Leap 5K road race Sunday, in a time of 20:06.
Longmont resident Isaias Gomez finished second (21:48) and John Prater, also of Longmont, was third (22:10).
Dana Ware Willett, of Longmont, won the women's race in 25:41, followed by Lisa Pride (Denver, 26:31) and Michelle Burns (Longmont, 32:35).
EXTRA EFFORT Seth Smith hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning to power the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 12-9 road win against the Tucson Sidewinders in a Pacific Coast League game.
Singles by Smith and Cory Sullivan in the ninth resulted in four runs to send the game into extra innings.
ON TRACK Fort Morgan driver Jeremy Frenier won the Modifieds feature race Saturday night at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan.
John Burrow Jr. (Denver, Sport-Mods), Justin Simonson (Wheat Ridge, Super Stocks), Chris Baker (Longmont, Mod- Lites), Loren Walker (Fort Morgan, Econos) and Jake Muehlbauer (Eads, Dwarfs) also won races.
