STYLE MATTERS: Win age-old battle by staying stylish

Evelinda: We are seeing lots of self-help books on the market claiming to help women look younger. These books offer advice from the absurdly expensive - like injecting collagen into your feet so you can still wear stilettos - to obvious suggestions - don't wear short-shorts.

Judie: We perused three books and distilled some of the most useful and affordable tips for you, Stylish Reader. Our philosophy matches that of Sherrie Mathieson, author of Forever Cool, who writes: "Yes, we need to confront the realities of aging, but we don't need to feel defeated by it. Nor do we need to go to extremes ... If we can put our self-worth, health and fitness first, we can set a new benchmark for aging gracefully."

Evelinda: You can look more current and youthful by heeding some of the changes suggested in books like Forever Cool, How Not to Look Old by Charla Krupp and Bobbi Brown Living Beauty.

Judie: If none of these tips work, take this advice on aging from Lorraine Bracco: "I have had a much younger boyfriend for the past four years. That helps."

How to look younger

Easy tips from the pros to start with:

* Don't wear your glasses attached to a chain around your neck.

* Wear a bra that raises your "girls" halfway between your shoulder and your elbow.

* Change any hair style that involves long hair parted down the middle.

* Whiten yellow teeth and shorten nails.

Clothing tips

* Stay away from clothing with glitter, sparkles, sequins, cutesy sayings and holiday themes.

* Never wear hose with open-toed shoes.

* Throw out Mom jeans. Go to a denim bar and try on fresher styles.

* Don't button or close a blouse at the neck. It looks frumpy.

* Shorten skirts to the middle of the knee for a longer-leg look.

* If your daughter can wear it and will wear it, you shouldn't.

Makeup tips

* Forget thick matte foundation and switch to tinted moisturizers.

* Brightly colored eye shadow and thick, dark eyeliner are aging.

* After applying lipstick and lip liner, finish with a high-shine lip gloss to brighten your face.

* Tweeze chin and lip hairs.

Move on to these tips

* Glasses: Krupp recommends having three styles: Office, weekend and formal occasions. Look for younger- style frames "that are horizontal with a slight upward tilt at the outer edges."

* Hair: If you are coloring your hair, make sure it's not too dark and only one shade. Adding highlights softens the face. Update the cut by adding layers.

* Skin: Invest in dermatologist-prescribed retinoid cream to minimize wrinkles.
