LINCICOME: Virtue alone won't lift woeful Broncos

Former Broncos kicker Jason Elam won games with his leg but disappointed some with substandard kickoffs.

Darin McGregor / The Rocky/2007

Former Broncos kicker Jason Elam won games with his leg but disappointed some with substandard kickoffs.

Character is the byword for the Broncos, decency the theme, as if either ever made a tackle or broke one.

Still, if the Broncos are going to be foot wipes, they will not be presoiled, even when treachery seems the way to win, just considering the New England Patriots.

If, as Mike Shanahan insists, character wins championships, still Bill Belichick's bunch are not giving any of theirs back.

The balance between mean men full of the rage required for football and solid citizens using napkins has always been uncertain, not to diminish such rituals as the pregame prayer or the postgame benediction.

It can be done and, ideally, it should be, but anyone is a fool to think it is easy.

Football does not attract the same sort of human male as, oh, tennis or crew. Enduring pain, inflicting pain is not just the job but the joy.

The expectation is for cruelty, and there are endless rules to control it.

Since finishing 7-9 last season, the Broncos have become a worse football team, eliminating their linebackers and tossing away a wide receiver here, a running back there, a coordinator, a general manager; letting the veteran placekicker go; drafting ciphers; signing strangers.

It has been a busy time, all with the assigned motive of making the Broncos a better football team. And the Thanksgiving turkey is a better bird after dinner than it was the day before.

This does not consider the worrying condition of a third-year quarterback, now concerned with not just numbers on the field but blood-sugar levels as well, an added consideration for an unestablished player at football's most vital position.

But, not to worry, this is a team of character.

And what does that mean, exactly? It means that the players mind the coach and stay off the police blotter. This could be known as the Todd Sauerbrun Rule.

Here's what we know about Travis Henry, fired by press release. If he had been the 1,500-yard running back he promised, he would still be a Bronco. If his knees were sound, so would be his roster spot.

No matter how many Henry missed of these endless excuses for overcoaching that fill up the offseason, if he could produce, he would be forgiven.

Same is true of Javon Walker, misjudged by Shanahan when he acquired him and released not for bad character but for bad performance.

Jason Elam was overflowing with character, still is. And why is he not a Bronco? Because he could no longer kick off into the end zone.

The list of Shanahan's misjudgments is long, and typical of all coaches who believe someone else's problems will not be theirs. Conduct will change because the player is playing for him now. Character becomes an issue only when a player underperforms.

Pacman Jones, the poster lout for noncharacter NFL players, is home again in Dallas, the same place that took in Tank Johnson. It took endless arrests and suspensions for the Bengals to finally get rid of Chris Henry, and Chad Johnson is unable to wear out his welcome in Cincinnati or, like Henry, make it to any minicamp.

How long did Bill Romanowski endure, and when was he no longer tolerated? Only after he could no longer play well enough to be forgiven.

A noble and handy alibi is character, useful when things go badly and unbearable when things go well. Doing it the right way rings with a smug superiority when it rings, and it almost never does.

Expectations for the Broncos are as low as they have been since the Super Bowl years. They are a team of very modest prospects, a team of limited aspiration, and they will need every bit of the strength of character they can get.

This is not to suggest the Broncos are excusing disappointment with good citizenship, but just in case that's the way it turns out, please try to remember the following:

When the new field-goal kicker, whoever he is, misses at the gun, think not that he has an awful leg but that he has a pure soul.

Whichever running back, likely Selvin Young to start, fails to get the first down, that is nothing next to a good heart.

The pass rush might not cause a visiting quarterback to break a sweat, never mind the pocket, yet the defensive line never forgets a birthday or to put down the seat.

Beaten deep, the secondary will still make curfew and help old ladies across the street. Even if they don't want to go.

Training camp won't start in earnest for a month yet and you are already trashing the team? Can't the Rocky Mountain News find any writers that can look at the Denver area sports teams with their cups at least half full instead of half empty? What kind of sports writer knocks a team for wanting to build on a combination of character and talent? It's funny this opinion comes from Lincicome the same day articles are being written about Rod Smith coming to camp to help with the development of new players. The same Rod Smith who exemplifies steadfast character and dedication to making oneself better, someone who does not need "bling" to prove he is a man and a professional football player. A better atricle would have focussed on how the Broncos can take some of the Rod Smith style to a team level and leave behind the irresponsibility of the Travis Henrys and the bad attitudes of the Javon Walkers of the world and take the high road way of playing the game. The result may not be an immediate championship but rather the nucleus of a stronger team for both this year and the years to come.

Dude, no one wants to read this type of garbage. Not only that, the article has one major flaw. Elam was offered a great deal by the Broncos to stay. Atlanta offered basically the same deal but for a year longer. Elam took the money and LEFT BY HIS OWN WILL. He has not been a good kick off guy for us for years you frickin' genius.
I LOVE this team. The thing you dont realize, and I can only summise is because you have never played team sports at ANY level in your life, is that a CHAMPION TEAM will always beat a TEAM OF CHAMPIONS. Talent wise, this team is better than last year, and as a couple of posters before me mentioned, character is the core of great teams.
Bernie, you are a joke. You have NO knowledge of the game, and you are the MAJOR reason I barely read this paper.
RMN, let Jeff Legwold do ALL the articles for you guys, as he is a REALLY good and knowledgeable writer and give Bernie the boot.

    Bernie-
You're full of negative crap! This team has been struggling and going nowhere for several years under the management of Sundquist and players like Walker and Henry. Yes, Elam was a high character guy, and the Broncos offered him a contract that would have made him the #3 paid kicker in the league (not bad for his limited abilities). But he chose more bonus money from the Falcons in exchange for long-term security by the Broncos- proving that he's planning on only playing 1-2 more years. The Broncos would have had to make a move by next year anyway, so why not now?

This team is finally getting back on track under the renewed and refreshing leadership of Shannahan. He's working his tail off, taking over control in areas where others (Sundquist, Bates, etc) have failed this team, and positioning the Broncos for greatness for years to come.

Bernie- shut up and pack it in. I'm not reading your dribble anymore. Your one of the main reasons I barely bother with RMN. If they continue to let you hang around, they're not getting any more of my business!

One day Lincicome writes about how the injury-ridden Rockies are losing "as they should" (thanx, Jeff Francis, for changing that last night!) - then today, the attack is on the "woeful" Broncos. "Woeful" is a term usually reserved for teams that go 1-15 or lose their star quarterback to federal dog-torturing charges or have several consecutive seasons with records of 2-14 or 4-12 a la the Oakland Raiders. The Broncos are NOT a woeful team as they head into training camp. This is the time most teams have HOPE for the season, and OUR Denver Broncos are no exception. New faces, new schemes, and everyone will be tied at 0-0 for 3 more months. What is truly woeful is having lead writers that constantly beat up the local teams. What ever happened to rooting for the home team?

I wonder if Bernie winks at himself in a mirror when he writes this stuff. One would assume that since he's been writing his drivel in Denver for a few years now-- he must have some sort of clue burried somewhere in his intellect. He didn't jump from the Bohunk Daily Standard to the Rocky Mountain News. He makes Mark Kizla seem both optimistic and profound, which most rational men would see as impossible. Does he not get that Javon Walker, Travis Henry and Ian Gold do not perform because they lack character? With these guys, the two are not mutually exclusive. Henry would rather do almost anything than play football if its not Sunday or Monday in September through December. Walker doesn't care about winning unless he's the reason they win. Gold figures he's payed millions to play linebacker how he wants to play it no matter who's signing the checks. To suggest that this team is somehow worse because these three are gone? That's just a writer that has become so lazy that he can't and won't take any angle but the negative. Bernie, some might suggest that you have some character issues. You take the path of least resistence because you then get enough attention to justify your chronic laziness. That might be enough at the RMN, but its wouldn't be enough for the Denver Broncos. Call me crazy, but I sort of like that about Mike Shannahan.

It seems no matter what the Broncos do, they'll get toasted. I like the off season moves. I like adding character, character builds teams. Javon Walker was let go because he said he wanted to leave, and he didn't perform. Travis Henry had potential, but was injury prone, and it sounds like he blew off mini-camp. To top it off, he had a lot of, off the field problems. I think it's a combiniation of poor performance and poor character that caused these guys to be let go. I don't understand what happened to Elam, but I do think his leg isn't what it used to be. He had some game winners last year, but also missed some FG's under 45 yards. Changes had to be made, the team has been on the decline, and I like the young talent.
Anyway, how about just reporting the news, I don't really care what you think as you are trying to create a controversy out of a team saying they're going after character guys. I'd rather hear how the team looks on the field, who's standing out and who will be our next Terrel Davis.

Please go back to the windy city from where you came from. I have asked this of you for 3 years. I use to have the RMN as one of my Favorite sites. You are always pushing Bad buttons on our Denver teams! You always type negitive press about our teams here in Denver. But you must GO. It's like you enjoy getting the reaction I am now typing! I have tried e-mailing your Boss to no response! You are not of good open minded writer and do not belong in our push to reclaim THE DENVER BRONCOS as the class act in the NFL. I do not care if we go 0-16. We would still hold our heads high and say in a unified voice GO BRONCOS. You would not understand this.

Good article. If any of these humps had produced on the field they would still be in town and the goofs posting would be saying character does not matter, its on the field performance that counts, what they do off the field is their business.

    Bernie,

If your only goal is to get a reaction, you have surely succeeded. However, you are not Howard Stern and if you take pride in this garbage you've produced you have no pride in your work.

If people wanted to read crap like this they would go to a Raider Nation web page and read posts with some passion behind them rather than:

"This does not consider the worrying condition of a third-year quarterback, now concerned with not just numbers on the field but blood-sugar levels as well, an added consideration for an unestablished player at football's most vital position."

You have no talent. It's not that I just disagree with you. Your writing is boring opions about things we already knew. Cutler has diabetes? Really? When did that happen?

    Please find another job.

Not to defend Lincicome (why would anyone?), but what makes you people think he bothers to read these replies? I've met a few sports writers over the years, and they usually think the average fan is an idiot homer. Writing these things is like yelling at the TV.

    rambam,

You are probably right but then what is Lincicome's motivation for writing what he does? I think he's just trying to rile up the local fans. You don't think he takes a peek to see if he's getting to them? Even if he's not reading, others are and my major criticism is not the difference in opinion, it's the lack of reasearch and creativity. When Joe Blow posting comments has greater knowledge and insight than the paid writer someone has to question why the guy is where he is. If the Broncos produced like Linicome, 7-9 would have been a career year.

HBBeough, valid point. Lincicome, is just like the pointless Bronco haters that get on the Bronco blog to talk nonsense with absolutely no goal in mind but to prove what we already knew, that they are idiots who try to get a rise but only can do it in a crowd of backup or on the Internet. Me, I just think that if their IQ's were 2 points lower, they would be trees. I've read some things that are hilarious. I prefer talking Bronco football and about the teams strengths and weaknesses. But we always get someone who will write something hateful, without merit, (like Lincicome) and we are forced to shake our heads at someone, who, in all likelihood, never played a sport in their entire lives. Me, I've kickboxed professionally in the ring and served in the military for 10 years (10th Special Forces Group, Airborne). So I feel I can talk the talk, walk the walk, and at least study about football and know something about it, rather then just spout off at the mouth. I, sir, applaud you.

Well, whatever Shanahan's doing, it's not bringing in Pittman because he's a "character" guy. He's been THRICE convicted of domestic assault/battery. In one incident, he rammed his SUV into his wife's car, with his wife and child inside the car, to prevent her from leaving the house, going so far as to push it over a median and rip off a tire. If anything, Shanahan's bringing in problem guy.

I am not so sure that the poor negative articles comming from linicome are all his fault. It seems this is the style taught at journalism school. They are so poor at reporting good that they slant positive stories to become negative ones. I guess Linicolmes fault is for not having a mind of his own.

Vandala, sorry man, but you're wrong when you stated what they do on their own time is their own business. So, it's ok for Pacman Jones to go to strip clubs, create trouble till others got shot and paralyzed for life? And he did this not only in Vegas (creat trouble), where I live, but in Atlanta, just within 3 months of his last antics. In my opinion, he is less then a man and definitely fails as a person. Yet the NFL will probably let him play, all the while he swears his big mouth didn't do anything to create these problems and feels no remorse at the paralyzed bouncer from Vegas. So, nothing that they do off-field is anyone's business? That is so wrong. When we quit caring about what people do, whether it be the NFL or in everyday life, that is reason for concern.

Well Bernie we'll see if, at the end of a great season, you recant this horse crap article. I almost consider you a band wagon fan. Most certainly, you will have all but forgotten your comments above and making statements like "I knew this team was a winner from day one" But alas Bernie, we the Bronco faithful will not let you forget. Your postings are a main reason why I spend more time on the Posts web site than on the RMN. Why so harsh on the Broncs? They dismiss you from the locker room? Maybe you should step down and cover prep sports. I'll close now by simply saying you stink at your craft and you're lucky we, as fans, can't dismiss you for poor performance.
