A resident of the Airways Hotel is comforted by a friend as he waits to be transported to the hospital after a late morning fire Wednesday June 4,2008 in the 1500 block of Verbena Street. The man was transported to the hospital with severe chest pains. The owner of the Hotel tried to put out the blaze but finally called 911. The cause of the fire is under investigation according to Phil Champagne of Denver Fire.
Three people are homeless after escaping a fire at a residential motel this morning.
One man suffered smoke inhalation, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. His wife was not injured, and a child who lived with them was not home. Two dogs and two cats died in the blaze.
Firefighters responded to the Airway Motel near East Colfax Avenue and Verbena Street about 11 a.m. and extinguished the blaze in 18 minutes, Denver fire Phil Champagne said.
The owner of the nine-unit motel was unsuccessful in attempts to put out the blaze, which firefighters contained to a single unit.
The fire "took off right away," Champagne said.
Champagne said the Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
