* Why here? The lake offers good fishing for larger-than- average trout. Unlike several other North Park waters, no special fishing regulations apply.

* What's hot? After a late spring, trout remain in shallow water, close to shore. Fishing with a variety of baits, flies and lures has been good.

* Tackle box: Night crawlers, Power Bait, Rapalas, Tasmanian Devils, Chironomidae midge patterns and Woolly Buggers.

* Best times: Mornings and late afternoons.

* How to get there: From Denver, travel to Walden. From Walden, head west a half-mile on Colorado 14 to County Road 12W, then eight miles west to County Road 7, then proceed seven miles to the lake.

* Ask the experts: North Park Anglers, 1-970-723-4215, or Lake John Resort, 1-970-723-3226.

* Fishing report: The Colorado Division of Wildlife continues to have computer problems, so the Colorado Fishing Report is not available. For a fishing overview, stocking report and Bulletin Board, visit RockyMountain News.com/fishing-report.

* Fish tales: Show off photos of fish you've caught, or look at other anglers' big catches. Go to RockyMountainNews.com/ your-space/ and click on "Landing the Big One."
