Authorities believe drugs were involved in a fatal crash Saturday night just north of Fort Collins that killed a 28- year-old Maine man.

The Colorado State Patrol reported that Christopher Douglas died at the scene after the vehicle he was riding in was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche that crossed the center line of Colorado 287.

The head-on crash happened about 8:35 p.m.

Investigators said the southbound white Avalanche driven by Gregory Nessler, 20, of Fort Collins, crashed into a northbound gold 2002 Toyota driven by Amy White, 24, of Denver. Douglas was a passenger in the car.

White sustained serious injuries and was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital.

Nessler sustained minor injuries and also was hospitalized before being taken to the Larimer County Jail.

A passenger in the Chevy, Tyler Santomaso, 20, of Fort Collins, sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized.

All four people were wearing seat belts.

Nessler faces charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a drug and careless driving causing injury.

Investigators also said Nessler broke the law by displaying a fake driver's license.
