Patrick Marold
* What: New sculpture by the Colorado-based artist
* Where and when: Artyard, 1251 S. Pearl St.; through Aug. 9
* Why less is more: Nothing against extravagance, but merely walking into Artyard right now will lower your blood pressure (and body temperature) by several points.
That's because work in wood by Denver native Patrick Marold demonstrates that simplicity, honesty and - yes - elegance remain powerful attributes in art.
Marold created a stir last year with his Windmill Project in Vail. But he preceded that with a strong debut show at Artyard: the 2005 Arcweight, a minimalist cascade of suspended steel cable that created a stunning environment. In conjunction, he also showed works called Stacked Arcs, wood and steel pieces that segue into work now on view.
When Marold turns to wood to release the inner meaning of the material, the results are memorable. Whether lyrical (Hoisted Arc), sylphlike (his Tapered Column), imposing (Blackened Stack and 3 Strokes) or compact (various interpretations of Hive), this former studio assistant to Andy Goldsworthy has an intrinsic feel for material and eye for beauty. And a sense of respect. These pieces have been coaxed from wood Marold salvaged from fallen trees.
