Should the Rockies trade Brian Fuentes?
News and notes from around the Internet about the Rockies' possible moves at baseball's trade deadline.
Are Rockies interested in Lohse?
Here's one of the most surprising names to pop up on the "available" list in the last 24 hours -- Kyle Lohse. Officials of two teams that spoke with the Cardinals report that they've been offering to deal Lohse if they can get back the right package. So Lohse could dramatically alter the starting-pitching market Thursday if the Cardinals can find the right taker. Among the teams still looking for a starter: White Sox, Rockies and Yankees. ESPN.com
Rockies would trade Fuentes for the right price
Indications are that if the Rockies can get what they want -- a top-quality prospect who can step into the rotation right now -- Fuentes would be dealt. St. Louis, the Mets, Boston, the White Sox and Phillies are among teams still in the hunt for the Rockies’ closer. Tracy Ringolsby
Rockies kicking the tires
Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd would like to make a deal before tomorrow's deadline at 2 p.m. MDT in Denver. While the Rockies have been walking the fine line between being buyers and sellers, O'Dowd would like to do something that would have a long-time benefit.
The most likely thing to happen would be the Rockies to bring back RHP Josh Fogg from Cincinnati, but that is on hold while the Rockies see if something with more impact might happen. And that would be more a deal to do something rather than something of impact. If Fogg is acquired he would replace either Jorge De La Rosa or Glendon Rusch in the rotation. Rusch and Fogg are a push. De La Rosa, meanwhile, does have an upside if he can continue to move forward. The biggest appeal to Fogg is the clubhouse impact he creates.
O'Dowd will make one last inquiry of teams that have shown interest in LHP Brian Fuentes, but word is he is not backing off his demand of getting a young starting pitcher with a strong upside who could step into the Rockies rotation in the deal.
He also is checking out starters he feels could impact the rotation, but when he checks in with Seattle (Jarrod Washburn, who has a $10.3 million guarantee for next year) or Oakland (Justin Duchscherer) or Washington (Tim Redding) the packages that teams want in return start with Dexter Fowler and that's not where they end. The names of Casey Weathers and Ian Stewart are added, and there's more that the other teams want, which is way more than the Rockies should or would give up. Tracy Ringolsby
Fuentes targeted by Mets
The non-waiver deadline is tomorrow, and Manuel's preference would be another team's closer who could come in and serve as the eighth-inning set-up man. That description in the current trade market best fits Rockies lefty Brian Fuentes, a known Mets target.New York Post
Rockies waiting until after Pirates series to make buy/sell decision
The Rockies are still telling teams they won't make any buy-or-sell decisions until after they finish their series in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. But teams in on Brian Fuentes seem more doubtful than ever that he'll be traded.ESPN.com
Mariners trying to entice Rockies with Washburn
The Mariners may be facing the same problem with left fielder Raul Ibanez that they are with left-hander Jarrod Washburn. The trade market for both players appears limited. Stalemated with the Yankees over Washburn, the Mariners are trying to stir interest in other clubs, including the Rockies. Lots of luck when the M's want to purge the remainder of Washburn's $9.85 million salary this season and $10.35 million salary next season and get legitimate players in return.Fox Sports
Fogg rolling back in?
The Rockies, searching for a starting pitcher, remain interested in re-acquiring right-hander Josh Fogg, who left the team for the Reds last off-season as a free agent. Fogg shares a unique bond with the Rockies' players, drawing confidence from their confidence in him. More Rockies: Two straight losses in Pittsburgh could leave the team more open to trading potential free-agent closer Brian Fuentes. But the Rockies, seeking a young starting pitcher with upside for Fuentes, have struggled to find a proper match . . . Fox Sports
Teams holding out hope Rockies will trade Fuentes
It's starting to look like the Orioles will hang on to George Sherrill, reducing the closer market further. They were hoping to get a starting shortstop for Sherrill, such as Milwaukee's terrific prospect Alcides Escobar or Anaheim's Erick Aybar. So far, no go. With Damaso Marte gone to the Yankees and Brian Fuentes likely staying in Colorado (Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd called a trade for Fuentes "highly unlikely'' a couple days ago, but a couple teams are still holding out hope), Oakland closer Huston Street may be alone on the market now. And some execs think A's GM Billy Beane may still wait for Street to bring his value back up.SI.com
Rockies undecided about Fuentes
Contrary to what you may have read or heard, the Rockies have not taken Brian Fuentes off the market -- not according to the seven teams that are still interested in him, anyway. Then again, the Rockies haven't exactly paraded him up to the auction stand in that market and said, "Make your bid," either.ESPN.com
Rockies looking at Byrd, Redding and Snell
Indians right-hander Paul Byrd remains a secondary consideration for teams looking for a back-of-the-rotation starter. The Rockies are in that group, but they would prefer a pitcher with better stuff — Nationals righty Tim Redding and Pirates righty Ian Snell are among their possible targets.Fox Sports
Phillies shopping for a lefty, but not Fuentes
The Phillies, in pursuit of a left-handed reliever, inquired about the Royals' Ron Mahay, but are not the front-runner to acquire him, according to major-league sources. The interest in Mahay has intensified, and other teams are willing to pay a greater price than the Phillies. The Rockies, at least for the moment, are not discussing deals involving closer Brian Fuentes. The Orioles so far have been unsuccessful in their quest to acquire a young shortstop for closer George Sherrill.Fox Sports
Holliday, Fuentes trade likelihood fading
On Holliday: A winter project. The Rockies appear in it to win it now. On Fuentes: With the Rockies still in it, his chances to move are also "highly unlikely'' in the words of Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd. SI.com
Rockies interested in Indians' Byrd
Some teams, including the Colorado Rockies, have shown interest in veteran right-hander Paul Byrd of the Indians. Byrd is 4-10 with a 5.14 ERA this season, and if the Indians don't deal him before Thursday's deadline, he might be the classic example of a pitcher who could be moved in August, as he passes through waivers. ESPN.com
Torrealba for sale, but no buyers
The Rockies are on a roll and they've all but shut down the phones as far as taking calls on Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes. They were never that serious about dealing them, not in the sense that they were definitely going to be moved. Instead, they were just shopped, eBay-style, with a high reserve that everyone balked at. The team is very willing to move some lesser players, like Yorvit Torrealba, for pitching, but there's not much market out there. Those looking for catching are waiting on the waiver wire to start when bigger names, such as Ivan Rodriguez, could be in play. Baseball Prospectus
Rockies willing to trade Fuentes for starter
The Rockies remain willing to trade closer Brian Fuentes if they can acquire a young starting pitcher whom they could plug immediately into their rotation. Someone like Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez would qualify, but the Fish consider Sanchez too steep a price. Phillies lefty J.A. Happ could be another possibility, and the Rays have a host of options at Class AAA . . . Fox Sports
Arroyo off the market
The Reds have informed other clubs that they no longer are interested in trading pitcher Bronson Arroyo. Only the Yankees and Rockies were known to have demonstrated even mild interest, anyway. But Cincinnati apparently was finding that the $24 million Arroyo has coming through 2010 was going to keep it from getting any worthwhile return. ESPN.com
Hot streak cools Rockies interest in Holliday trade
With the Rockies' hot streak, it would be difficult to imagine them trading Holliday now. The same goes for reliever Brian Fuentes, though he's a free agent after the year and more replaceable (Manny Corpas seems to be back, lowering his ERA two runs in a month and a half). If Fuentes goes, the Cardinals, Rays and Marlins look like possible players. SI.com
Rockies pulling back on trades
An executive involved in the Brian Fuentes trade talks says the Rockies are "pulling back" and don't seem as though they intend to trade him now that they are moving into contention in the National League West. The Mets are still among the teams interested in Fuentes.ESPN.com
Rockies not sure whether to buy or sell
With its blowout of the Reds on Sunday, Colorado is now 28-20 in its past 48 games, and has closed the gap in the NL West to 5½ games. So as the Rockies continue to talk possible deals for Fuentes, a free agent after this season, they are also talking about adding a starting pitcher, in case they are buyers instead of sellers. The Rockies have talked to the Reds about Bronson Arroyo, and to Oakland about Justin Duchscherer.ESPN.com
Cardinals the favorite for Fuentes
The Rockies want Anibal Sanchez and a prospect for Brian Fuentes. The Marlins will not give up Sanchez and are likely to pursue Seattle's Arthur Rhodes instead. The Cardinals, Angels and Rays are also in on Fuentes, and the feeling is that the Cardinals are the favorites. Colorado likes the Cards' farm system.ESPN.com
Marlins interested in Fuentes
Clubs that have spoken with the Marlins say they've been offering to swap out-of-sync lefthander Taylor Tankersley for a more experienced left-handed reliever. And Colorado's Brian Fuentes and Baltimore's George Sherrill are at the top of the Marlins' shopping list. But there are no indications they're close to a deal for either of those two. ESPN.com

Paul Byrd is a guy that is, or at least was about to lose his spot in the Tribe's rotation. He's won his last 2 starts, but was on the fence prior to that (I got him in one of my fantasy leagues). Still, we could use the veteran at the bottom of our rotation. The Indians really need some power right now. I don't know if we can afford that. Plus, O'Dowd has seemed very gun-shy in regards to pulling off a trade over the past several years. If O'Dowd would be willing to part with somebody the likes of Ian Stewart, he would get the coveted starter he seeks. This isn't UNICEF, Dan. Nothing is without cost. Eventually, he will have to make a move. His inability/refusal to make moves has previously costed him. Even though I would have ended up throwing some sort of tantrum if he did, he missed the window on trading Helton. He had what, 3 years to put a deal together? And he waits until the last minute to get told, once again, that his asking price is just too high.
The Rox, & their moves at the deadline, are beginning to resemble the Denver Nuggets on draft day...absent.

I did not just suggest trading Stewy for Byrd. Stewy is worth a top end starter, Byrd is a bottom end starter at best.

What about this block buster:
BoSox send: Manny, Bucholz and Pedoria for
Rockies: Holliday, Barmes, and Fuentas
Makes sense, don't lose any slugging for this year and can let Manny walk after the year or resign him if it works, get better at 2nd and middle rotation guy, for guys we would lose next year.

It would be nice to see Taveras leave -- but who wants a lead-off batter that has a sub-.300 OBP?

bigbadthor, first off Bucholz and Pedoria aren't going anywhere. The Red Sox won't trade them. Manny? No thank you. Manny is for Manny. Don't need someone like that stinking up this team. Have you not been paying attention to what's going on in Boston? Hope they keep Matt, he's a class act guy. This team has got major talent, all they need is one more good starting pitcher. What happened to them was their dismal first half and now they are clawing their way back. Don't give up on them just yet.

Get Jason Hirsh back and theirs that starting pitcher they need. Once touted as a future ace, Jason Hirsh surely will make a better #5 starter than anyone on the market right now.

The Braves already got a good first baseman in their trade, Casey Kotchman and they will have him for a few years. And, yeah, what's happening with Hirsh? Don't really see O'Dowd making a big buy, sell, trade, or whatever. But, we'll see.
