QUITTERS ALWAYS WIN
Having been a two-pack-a-day smoker ourselves, Extra! sympathizes with those struggling to quit. But here's some good news: the folks at Colorado QuitLine tell us they've provided more than 100,000 free nicotine patches, helping Coloradans to kick the habit, to whit:
85 percent of Colorado smokers have indicated they want to quit.
4 percent have succeeded when trying to quit on their own.
28 percent succeed in quitting by using the QuitLine coaching services.
38 percent succeed when combining the QuitLine coaching with nicotine patches.

KNOW A POET?
TIME TO SHOW IT
If the post were Director of Doggerel, we'd nominate ourselves. But it's the post of Colorado poet laureate that's up for grabs, with nominations currently being accepted. Gov. Bill Ritter will make the final selection, based on artistic excellence, a demonstrated history of community service in the advancement of poetry and the ability to present poetry effectively.
Deadline for nominations is Oct. 1 and should be mailed to Colorado Center for the Book, Colorado Humanities, 1490 Lafayette Street, Suite 101, Denver, CO 80218, Attention: Poet Laureate.
Past and current poet laureates:
* Nellie Burget Miller (1923-1952)
* Margaret Clyde Robertson (1952-1954)
* Milford E. Shields (1954)
* Thomas Hornsby Ferril (1979Â?1988)
* Mary Crow (1996-present)
