ENGLEWOOD –- Just two days into training camp practices and the Broncos were forced to make a roster move.

With wide receiver Edell Shepherd having injured his left leg in practice Friday -- he tore the hamstring and anterior cruciate ligament -– the Broncos quickly signed Taylor Jacobs to replace Shepherd on the roster.

Shepherd was moved to reserve/injured and will miss the season.

Jacobs spent part of the 2007 season with the Broncos, appearing in six games, but he didn't have a reception.

The Broncos also worked out veteran cornerback Tyrone Poole at their Dove Valley complex Saturday, but he won't be signed unless they suffer an injury at the position in the coming weeks.

Right guard Montrae Holland was held out of the morning practice because he still wasn't at his reporting weight. Holland, who is listed at 322 pounds on the Broncos roster, reported 10 pounds in excess of his required reporting weight.

The team's concern is that, knowing Holland would be weighed when he arrived to training camp, that he likely lost as much as 15 to 20 pounds in just a few days' time before reporting.

Holland has been doing plenty of conditioning work, including pushing a 210-pound sled across the practice field, while the team has gone through its workouts.

"We're going to take it slow, make sure we get it off right,'' said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "It's going to take some time.''

The player filling in at Holland's right guard spot, Chris Kuper, suffered a fractured right metacarpal in his hand in practice Friday and worked out with a cast on his hand Saturday.

He will have the hand re-casted each day for practice for about six weeks.

Jacobs won't make it. He is not known as a good blocker and as we all know, Denver expects their WR's to also do downfield blocking, etc.. We have too much talent, other then him, available, that will make the squad.
