A horse grazes Friday in front of the house in Bennett where "Spam King" Edward Davidson killed his wife, daughter and himself. Davidson drove his family to their former home before the shootings, which his teenage daughter and infant son survived. The teenager fled for help after being shot.

As the gunshots exploded inside the Toyota Sequoia, the 16-year-old girl in the back seat twisted and ducked in a desperate fight to get away from the death unfolding around her.

Just minutes before, on the way to the long, dusty driveway in front of the family's former home, the girl's disgraced father had said he had a gift for everyone. Now Eddie Davidson stood outside the driver's door of the silver SUV, a huge summer sky stretched out above him, firing shots from a .45-caliber pistol.

The first bullet killed his wife, Amy Lee Ann Hill, 29. The third one ended the life of his 3-year-old daughter, Bailey, strapped helplessly into her car seat.

In between, Davidson - dubbed the "Spam King" after being convicted of sending thousands of e-mail solicitations - shot at his oldest daughter. That bullet ripped across the back of the girl's neck, just grazing her skin, and an instant later she jerked open the door and ran. When she looked back over her shoulder, her father was pointing the gun at her, and all she could think was that that he was going to shoot her again.

She kicked off one of her white tennis shoes and then the other as she sprinted down the long gravel driveway, zigging back and forth, trying desperately to get away.

But when Davidson squeezed the trigger again, it was to end his own life, next to the driver's side of the Toyota. Only his youngest child, a 7-month-old boy, was unharmed.

From riches to prison

The story of Eddie Davidson's fall from grace and his final, violent moments on earth unfold in dozens of pages of federal court records and in a vivid police report detailing the terrifying account of his 16-year-old daughter.

For four years - 2003 through 2006 - Eddie Davidson seemingly had it all. A booming Internet business. A big house with a commanding view of the high plains. Money. During those four years, Davidson made about $3.5 million from his Internet business, which he ran with an elaborate system of computers in his home outside Bennett.

But it was an illusion, according to the portrait of Davidson's life painted by court documents.

While Davidson was raking in the money, he was hiding it from the government through a scheme of fake Social Security numbers, deposits into accounts controlled by his wife, and withdrawals below the $10,000 threshold that attracts the attention of bank regulators.

And his wealth and prosperity were built on a shaky foundation. Davidson's money came from companies that paid him to send hundreds of thousands of e-mails to people all over the country, hawking watches, perfume and penny stocks. It was illegal because Davidson manipulated the "header" information on the e-mails, obscuring who they were really coming from.

In 2007, it all came crashing down. A federal grand jury indicted Davidson. He ultimately was charged with falsifying information to send spam and tax evasion.

On April 28, Davidson stood before U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger after pleading guilty to three charges. Krieger sentenced him to 21 months in prison and ordered him to pay $714,139 in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. Davidson agreed to turn over 108 gold and platinum coins to the IRS to satisfy a portion of his back taxes. Davidson reported to a minimum-security prison at Florence on May 27 to begin his sentence.

Then, Sunday, his family visited him - his wife, his two daughters and his infant son. By then, Davidson had a nickname - the "Spam King."

The teen would later tell officers that as the visit ended, Davidson pushed his wife into the Toyota, ordered the kids in and sped away in a bold escape.

Later Sunday, Davidson dropped his wife and children off at the home of Hill's parents in Lakewood and disappeared.

A tragic ending

The 12-page Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office report that recounts the 16-year-old's recollections does not name her or her 7-month-old brother. But it paints a vivid sequence of events leading up to the burst of violence in the gravel driveway at 43042 E. Arkansas Place, the home where Davidson lived with his family, and where he ran his business before his world unraveled.

Thursday began with a phone call. Davidson told his wife that he was going to turn himself in to authorities. But he wanted to see his family first. Hill was reluctant, but she agreed to bring the children and meet him at the Home Depot at 6000 S. Gun Club Road.

It was about 9:45 a.m. Hill and the children were in the Toyota when Davidson pulled up in a beat-up old green car. He muscled his way into the driver's seat of the Toyota, shoving Hill to the passenger side, and drove off.

Bailey, his 3-year-old daughter, sat buckled in a car seat behind him. In the middle of the back seat, facing backward, was the car seat that held his 7-month-old son. Davidson's 16-year-old daughter sat on the passenger side in the back seat.

Davidson held a Kohl's bag, telling his family he had a gift for everyone.

He drove toward Bennett, where someone else now lived in the family's yellow, two-story clapboard home with a wide porch, and asked his wife and oldest daughter to tell stories about the happy times. He asked his wife if they would be together once everything was over.

As they drew closer to Bennett, Hill grew nervous.

Finally, Davidson pulled out the gun, a semiautomatic pistol, holding it to his head as he drove, putting it into his mouth.

"No, Eddie," Hill pleaded. "We love you. Don't do it."

As he pulled into the driveway leading to their former home, Hill asked him why they were there. Then he stopped, stepped out of the driver's door and pointed the gun at Hill.

She lunged for the gun, but he fired, hitting her in the head. Hill fell dead on the ground outside the passenger door of the Toyota. Then he turned and fired at his oldest daughter, but somehow she squirmed away at just the right instant and the bullet just cut the flesh on the back of her neck. Davidson turned to 3-year-old Bailey, strapped in her car seat and killed her.

By then, the teenager was out the door, running for her life. She hustled about a quarter mile to the closest home, where Denver police officer Jeff Cook, a nine-year veteran, lives.

Cook called for help, then moved toward the Toyota with his gun. When he got there, he found Davidson and Hill dead on either side of the vehicle, and a lifeless Bailey in a car seat.

Next to her, unharmed, was Davidson's 7-month-old son, still buckled into his backward-facing car seat.

This story could have been written much better. For example, this section is confusing:

"Eddie then shot 3-year-old Bailey, who was strapped in the car seat in the back.

The teen unlocked her door and started running, looking back to see her father pointing the gun at her again. She zigzagged, losing her shoes on the road, then ran a quarter mile to a neighbor's house.

The infant in the back seat was unharmed."

    Was the infant shot?

Well, it depends upon which of the three facilities you are talking about at Florence. The Bureau of Prison web site starts with: http://www.bop.gov/locations/institut... Under the ADMAX site: http://www.bop.gov/locations/institut... they talk about the "minimum security site". This is the Club Fed that does not have a fence around it.

In my opinion there should be two types of prisons at both the State and Federal level. Medium security which would use the Maricopa County Jail, http://www.cnn.com/US/9907/27/tough.s... , as a model and maximum security which would be modeled on a Turkish prison or equivalent Hell hole.

Wouldn't most people in Spam Jerk's position be thinking, "man, I lucked out getting Club Fed. No way am I getting in trouble and getting sent to a regular prison . . ." In other words, who needs a fence when nobody in their right mind would try to escape?

It would be one thing if we found out that the prison staff knew things that should have made them suspect Spam Jerk's mental stability, but we haven't yet seen any such evidence.

I am guessing the confusion about the baby (as opposed to the 3 year old toddler) is from this: "Police eventually found a report card for the 3-year-old in the back seat, and two slugs from a handgun in the baby seat where the infant was sitting." Either the infant was bundled up enough that the slugs went thru blankets/covers or he really couldn't bring himself to kill an infant.

infidel91 is right: clamoring to change a proven policy (minimum custody, no fences, expectation for compliant behavior) because of one upsetting incident is just knee-jerk stupid. The guy was a non violent offender - "the spam king". From what I hear, his wife picked him up, thus aided and abetted his escape. I doubt if she foresaw his murderous looniness.

You can't predict totally irrational behavior, nor should you establish policies because of it. Someone, anyone, could decide to throw a Molotov cocktail through your living room window tonight. If that does happens somewhere, should the government require that we all put steel plate over our windows?

VoiceOfTheRockies is also right: "If you want to blame someone, blame God."

God created a world where great evil is allowed to exist, yet nonetheless God has the expectation that many of us will do more
good than harm. I would hate to be one of those who has not reached out, and has not felt God's presence and love, and so therefore does not believe in God or an afterlife. Murder of innocents is always truly upsetting, but at least I am comforted in the belief that the victims are infinitely better off now than the murderer.

So next time something negative happens in your life, go ahead, stay in denial and blame Him, rather then your own stupid actions. What a poor piece of work you are. At least when my time comes, I won't have to concern myself with having future conversations with you.

So am I to believe that when a prisoner escapes, the prison guards do not give a description of car so that the highway patrol and local police can look for the car and that family residences aren't watched. What a system.

Prisons in Turkey are NOT what was portrayed by Oliver StoneD. They are actually a lot more humane (though, secure for sure) than here in the States.

YIOTA, you are calling Who_Me a hate monger???? Didn't you, in the previous sentence, refer to her as a 'dumba$$'? Yeesh, the pot calling the kettle....

For what it's worth, I agree with Who_Me. I always think it funny, when people are coming through some of the most atrocious events that could possibly happen in their lives and yet, they thank God that they got through it.

God didn't save these surviving children. The 16 year old saved herself and the baby got dang lucky. The father clearly snapped. "God" didn't save him, nor will he perish in a place silly people call H E L L. He's just dead. Beginning to decompose. That's all.

I hope the 16 year old has no access to the internet, though. She will need intensive therapy for many years to come and reading these articles won't help, at all. Fortunately, the baby is too young and will have no recollection.

ssqured and redwhiteandBLUE, sorry, went out with one of my gal-pals for dinner and some dancing. No, I haven't read anything about the San fran nightmare. I'll look it up tomorrow. My ex is from East LS and even she is sickened by all of the whining from illegals. I'll discuss with you guys later tomorrow. I have a private lesson at 10am at the studio. Then 1 class at 12pm. I'll talk with you again, sometime, I'm sure. Be cool.

I don't blame your god for squat, not do I think there is divine intervention. The bible thumpers are the ones who need love, you can tell by they way they address other people. Another example - the security guard in the Whacked for Life Church in Co Springs, saying in interviews how god steered/aimed her bullets at the killer. Umm, same god who was maybe directing the bullets of the killer? I don't know, just asking. Yes, after you suffer a great tragedy, you should then become blessed. It's all clear to me now. Where do I sign up?

Stories like this make me miss the days when newspaper articles were written about news, rather than just sounding like a script for a movie-of-the-week. What happened to writing the facts and letting readers decide the emotional content? Lots of people have it tough and lots of others die. If they're all going to get an article written in such a weepy, bleeding heart style I'm going to break out the popcorn and 3-D glasses. Yes, this is the legacy of Richard Nixon.

Who_Me, glad you saw the light (just kidding, pun intended). When I was in Kuwait and a child died in my arms, do you think I didn't look up and ask why? But I didn't blame. I just prayed that the child be looked after because there was nothing more we could do for him in this world. Hey, ssqured, I have a moment before my next class starts, so I thought I'd catch up on the chat. This forum can be funner then playing in a game show. Yeah, I think I wasted all my money, buying my own home. I could retire in Austria. Of course, I would require conjugal visits.

i still don't understand how lakewood can have their dumb-bass cops hiding all over in order to get $50 or whatever from a speeding ticket, but can't seem to stake out one or two homes in close proximity to each other where a jackass what just escaped from a prison will most likely go. apparently they receive no monetary compensation for catching a criminal so they didn't really care. lakewood cops hoover so hard.

hey, VoiceOfTheRockies, God is not to blame for this tragedy. God does not get involved with everything everyone does. If that were the case we would not have anything to worry about in the last days. We make our choices and live or die with them. I'm sure that He is holding the little one close to Him in this time. And by the way, God is a male like it says in the Bible, He made Adam in His likeness. I am female and believe this. Instead of getting mad, we should pray for the ones left behind, it will be a hard time for them.
