NUMBERS GAME

.271 average, a season high for Brad Hawpe. He has a hit in six straight games and nine of 10, going 18-for-40 (.450) with three homers, three doubles and nine RBI to increase his average from .242.

Right-handed pitcher Kip Wells, below right, appears headed back to the bullpen. Wells had the shortest start in Rockies history for a pitcher who wasn't removed because of an injury when he retired only one batter and gave up eight runs against the Dodgers on Monday.

Wells has made only 37 relief appearances in his career, going 6-2 with a 2.44 ERA He is 59-91 with a 4.77 ERA in 205 starts.

Wells' next start would have been Tuesday in Pittsburgh, but the Rockies could add a player through a trade or could decide to give a one-start look at current Triple-A starters Jason Hirsh, Franklin Morales or Greg Reynolds.

The guess would be left- hander Jeff Francis would be ready to come off the disabled list before a fifth starter is needed again after Tuesday's game.

GOING DOWN

Manuel Corpas has a 4.96 ERA, the first time it has been below 5.00 since April 19. He's unscored upon in 13 of his past 14 games, allowing two earned runs in 132/3 innings with no walks and 15 strikeouts and lowering his ERA from 6.37.

Etc.

Second baseman Jayson Nix has been picked to round out the U.S. baseball team headed to the Beijing Olympics. . . . The Rockies, who were 10 games out of first place in the NL West at the end of June, are six games back. The last time they were closer to first place was April 21, when they were five behind. . . . Jeff Baker is hitting .341 with six homers and 23 RBI at home and .228 with one homer and 11 RBI on the road. Baker got a hit in all seven games of the homestand that ended Wednesday, going 14-for-27 (.519). . . . Ian Stewart is 9-for-22 (.409) with runners in scoring position, including 6-for-9 in five games since returning from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday. . . . Matt Holliday has driven in two runs or more in four of his past six games. He hit 10 homers through July 3, or one every 27.1 at-bats. Since then, he has hit seven homers, an average of one every 9.1 at-bats.
