Lottery kind to Rapids, who sign Guarda

The Colorado Rapids added former Southern Methodist University midfielder Bruno Guarda a day after winning a Major League Soccer lottery.

Per club and league policies, terms weren't disclosed.

After his signing with MLS, Guarda waited to be assigned to his new club via the league's lottery system.

"Bruno is a skillful, creative midfielder who comes to us with a very impressive resume," Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo said. "As a team, we were fortunate to win this lottery for such a talented, technical player."

BARRINGER HONORED University of Colorado senior Jenny Barringer was named the USA Track & Field athlete of the week after setting the American record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the KBC Night of Athletics meet Sunday in Heusden, Belgium.

She ran a time of 9 minutes, 22.73 seconds to break the record of 9:27.75, which was set by Anna Willard on July 3. Barringer came from behind to eclipse Willard at the finish.
