Changing Identity

* What: Recent works by women artists from Vietnam

* Where and when: Metro State Center for Visual Art, 1734 Wazee St.; through Aug. 2

* Summer sleeper: The Center for Visual Arts serves as a home for work by Metro State students and faculty, but it's also hospitable to exhibitions that delve into topics as varied as innovative design and edgy photography.

Now, with "Changing Identity: Recent Works by Women Artists From Vietnam," the subject is how young Vietnamese artists use their perspective as women to view their homeland and their role in the society of a changed nation.

To that end, this show, curated by Nora Taylor of the School at the Art Institute of Chicago, offers a mix of vigorous and wistful work, from sumptuous photography by An-My Le to sleek fiber pieces by Dang Thi Khue. This one has flown under the radar but is worth a visit.

* And in the news: Metro State and CVA are raising money to buy their space on Wazee Street, a $2 million campaign kicked off by a $425,000 challenge grant from the Boettcher Foundation.

What a difference a few years makes. Since 2001, CVA has survived two bouts with turmoil, when the school administration began to tinker needlessly with its leadership. Now, the space has a good chance of marking its 20th anniversary in 2010. A Metro spokeswoman says the school hopes to have fundraising news to announce by Sept. 18, when Christo and Jeanne-Claude speak about their work in "Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects," opening Aug. 29 at CVA.
