SWAT members search the roof after a robbery at the credit union.

A man suspected of robbing a credit union Wednesday morning surrendered to Jefferson County sheriff's deputies several hours later, ending a daylong search.

The suspect, identified as Tobias Archuleta, 27, called police around 3:30 p.m. from the Southwest Plaza shopping center, according to Jim Shires, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies arrested Archuleta without incident a short time later, Shires said. They also have recovered an undisclosed sum of money and the handgun he allegedly used to fire two shots when the robbery began at the Bellco Credit Union at 10058 W. Progress Ave. in southern Jefferson County.

Surveillance video released by the sheriff's department showed the suspect, wearing a baseball cap and jeans, walking through the front door of the credit union at 9:15 a.m. He was not displaying a weapon.

John Wyckoff, a retired Denver police officer now serving as the credit union's security consultant, said the gunman walked in shortly after the building opened, opened fire and ordered everyone to get down on the floor. No one was injured.

An employee in the bank first called to alert police that a robbery was under way, Shires said.

A short time later, the robber fled, taking a set of keys from an employee and driving away in Silver Dodge minivan, Shires said. Members of the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force recovered the vehicle abandoned a short time later about a mile northwest of the bank at West Tulane Avenue and South Quail Street.

SWAT teams evacuated bank employees and customers. However, because of conflicting information regarding the possibility of a second suspect, everyone was led away in handcuffs.

"It was for everybody's safety that we restrained them until we could identify who everybody was," Shires said. After some brief questioning, everyone was released, he said.

Archuleta was booked into the Denver jail on investigation of federal bank robbery charges.

There were 208 bank robberies in Colorado in 2006, according to FBI reports. Complete figures for 2007 were not available.

When you go into a crime scene, and you aren't certain who is a victim, and who might be a hostage-taker, you had better treat everyone as a potential bad guy. You can apologize later. If you don't, and someone gets hurt, well, apologizing won't help much, will they? As far as what race or nationality (or whatever) the perp was, crime seems to be an equal opportunity profession. Check the pictures from CARI. I am simply glad they all got out safely.

mymilehi, I can understand why you find it so offensive that you were cuffed for attempted suicide, but you might want to consider that they really did not want you to try again, and handcuffs do make attempted suicide a bit more complicated. They also have to consider how many suicidal people have attacked policemen, in hopes of being killed. They just want you, and themselves, to stay alive. That said, I hope you're doing a lot better, now. Don't worry too much about people thinking you're crazy; sanity is really overrated.

These cops were doing their jobs. They cuffed the people for the sake of safety because they had no idea if any of them was an armed accomplice. Does that not make sense? It makes sense to me. I think the inconvenience of being cuffed for a few minutes in an attempt to keep everybody safe was far outweighed by the fact that 15 minutes earlier they were held at gunpoint by an idiot knocking over a bank, dont you?

I can at least tell you the cop rational for handcuffing everyone. Once a robber takes off the mask, he or she looks like everyone else. Cops are trained to treat everyone as a threat until proven otherwise. Being handcuffed for a few minutes is seen as a minor inconvenience in exchange for securing the area. Not sure I buy the reasoning, but that is how cops are trained.

By the way Floyd, nice job defending your racist assumption (which was proven false by the text of the article you were commenting on) by attacking the grammar of the guy who called you on it. Tell me what grade you were in when you learned to be a racist POS?

O.K. For all of you libs that have a hair-trigger on, "Sue 'THE MAN'" I'll explain why the cops cuffed everyone.

When the cops arrive on the scene they do not know who the goats are and who the sheep are. The goats may have planted an accomplice in with the sheep. The goat would probably be armed. Therefore, for EVERYONE'S safety, the cops treat EVERYONE as a potential goat. After everyone has been physically restrained, the cops can then make a thorough search of the building and all of the occupants to determine that they are all sheep.

Now, if the cops didn't treat the crime scene in this manner and if a goat was disguised as a sheep and if the goat went and blew away a few sheep you libs would be the first to castigate the cops and hire prostitutes (lawyers) to sue the cops.

Now as far as handcuffing all, for public safety, many of you who are condemning them for doing so would be calling the authorities morons if an accomplice ushered from the bank grabbed an officer's weapon and took hostages and/or went on a shooting spree.

I suppose you would also try to condemn, or sue, the authorities for "jailing" everyone in their home with the reverse 911. Remember these officers want to return safely to their families just as they want the public to return home safely to their families.

I wont even comment on how absurd the trade center analogy is. There were planes crashing into the building! I will, however address the Columbine one. First, its a slightly different situation because at Columbine both of the gunmen were known to still be in the building. In this case the gunman fled the scene and they were making sure that there wasn't an accomplice blending in with the victims. Cuffing them and making sure they weren't involved with the robbery was the right thing to do because it didn't hurt anybody and it didn't put anybody in harms way. At Columbine they were trying to get people to safety. Stopping them all and handcuffing people would have put people in harms way. The people who left the building, however, were brought out to peremedics and law enforcement before they left.

A police officers job is to protect the public by any reasonable means and to get home safely. In this siuation, those were reasonable means to keep the public safe.

The kicker is that if this protocol had not been followed and somebody would have pulled out a gun and started shooting, the police department would have been sued by every victim or victims family in there.

Please explain how such a harrowing experience as an armed bank robbery in which shots were fired and an armed suspect running loose in our neighborhoods digressed in to a "dating" chat line. I wasted 1.5 minutes reading this lonely hearts banter between all of you, get a freakin' life people...pathetic.

That's what we're trying to do. Sometimes it takes something like this to keep our sanity. People that are too serious all of the time are boring.

Jefferson is at it again with their screw ups. I don't think there is a case where Jefferson County wasn't laughed at for their actions. While they were cuffing all of the employees the perp got away. They never do the right thing at the right time. We should call them the Jefferson County Bungalers. A poor excuse for a sheriffs department. They are only good at harrassing teenagers in the neighborhoods. They should hire some real cops for the safety of the citizens in Jefferson County not these bozos. The danger for these employees didn't come from the robber. It came from the sheriffs department. Idiots like that shouldn't be allowedto carry firearms.

As for the handcuffing, I think its a necessary step to uphold for safety sake. Many robbers have historically attempted to aviod law enforcement by attempting to blend in with the hostages. It's not surprising at all. I am only glad that no one there was killed, as is the case all to often.

So sad, I know life is hard, but when the chips are down theres only two options: Right or wrong. This was wrong. I hope the person is caught before thie (white) man does something worse, and ends up dead or killing someone.

    I.
