Sound waves, goo guns won't be used on DNC protesters

City Council member Judy Montero, left, Denver City Attorney David Fine and mayoral aide Katherine Archuleta discuss convention security during a meeting at the City and County Building.

Denver officials expect to spend more than $18 million on police equipment for the Democratic National Convention — but the purchases apparently won't include high-tech weapons that use sonic waves to incapacitate protesters or goo guns to immobilize them.

That information, provided by the city to the American Civil Liberties Union as part of an agreement to delay a public records lawsuit, marks one of the most detailed looks yet at the super-secret efforts to provide security for the convention, scheduled Aug. 25 to 28.

The ACLU sued Denver in May under the state's public records law after city officials refused to provide documents showing how they were spending millions of dollars on police equipment.

"This budget overview reaffirms to the public our goal to provide the most effective and comprehensive security possible while maintaining an event that is inclusive and enjoyable for all," Mayor John Hickenlooper said in a statement issued by his office.

Denver police officials have been extremely circumspect in answering questions about either their security plans for the convention or their equipment purchases.

This afternoon, for example, Deputy Chief of Operations Michael Battista spoke in only general terms about equipment purchases when he was asked about them by City Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz.

"I'm purchasing equipment that's going to protect my officers," Battista said.

Later, the city disclosed more details about its purchases, which currently are projected to come in at $18.2 million.

They will not include non-lethal weapons that use "slime" or "goo" to immobilize protesters or that use microwaves or sonic waves to induce pain or other discomfort. Some convention watchers had alleged that the city might purchase a weapon that would cause people to defecate.

I'll bet they will use something with soundwaves anyway. When downtown starts coming apart, all bets are off. No slime or goo though, that stuff doesn't work on hippies because they are already covered in it and wouldn't notice.

You are not going to believe the hardware that will be purchased with this $18,200,000 windfall from (naturally) Homeland Security Dept. A lot will have absolutely no direct correlation with security. I am thinking new phone system, exercise equipment an spa. And a lot will be security overkill. Here I am thinking a new armored personnel carrier with chrome wheels and a full race cam.

And then after they get out of hand (as is almost always the case... see the WTO protests, the '04 Republican convention in NYC, etc.) they always get all whiny and accuse those on the right of "stifling their freedom of speech" and "crushing their dissent." Contrast that with the super-rare protest or demonstrations from right-leaning groups... when was the last time you people saw one of them get out of hand???

I hope it's some great stuff on thier shoppping list. Long overdue. 18 million ain't chicken scatch, hope they spend it wisely so maybe us taxpayers are a little richer here in Denver for someone else footing this particular bill. How much is going out, in paychecks and bonuses, during the DNC is what we'll have to audit. Equipment is really needed though.

OK, Mr. and Ms. Editor, how's this one? After all, I'm getting lots of pleasantries from conservative opponents to the 1st Amendment. So for the curious...

    ::with edits::

Evidently, conservatives don't believe in the 1st Amendment. That thing about free speech really gives them fits.

Conservatives have never been cool with the whole idea of human rights. They didn't want to give up slavery, even demanding that each one of their slaves count for 3/5 of a vote without actually letting them vote. It took a Civil War to straighten them out on that one.

They love foisting their crackpot religion on us. They say America is a "Christian" nation when they themselves provide all the proof we need to show that it's anything but. Then they get mad when we question their worship of Bush, crackpot notions about Jesus, and love for bloodshed and bombing so long as it doesn't happen to them as they sit bravely in their Lazyboy chairs egging on another generation of cannon fodder.

Just wait until the troops come home messed up. You think those nuclear workers have trouble getting help? Read history and look around.

Conservatives spend government money like drunken sailors. At least the drunken sailor was spending his own money. But they don't do anything good with it. They give it to war-profiteering billionaires, hire mercenaries, and of course, fatten their offshore accounts with the inevitable kickbacks from all that stuff. No wonder the US government is borrowing billions and selling us out to China, a potential adversary and most certain international competitor.

But ask a conservative to spend a little money on something that actually provides some benefit and value to the American public? Oh, NOOOO! They react like sack full of tomcats rolling around in a bonfire.

I've met some lowlifes in my life... bums, drunks, backhoes, drug addicts, and the whole gamut. But nobody beats a conservative when it come to being a hypocritical lowlife, nobody.

That's why conservatives hate the 1st Amendment. It let's us tell the truth about them.

PS. I hope you like this one :-). It's just like the other only more kid-friendly.

HolierTT: Gosh, you're really proud of that one, aren't you? I just want you to know that I didn't suggest removal of your simplistic, "conservatives are bad" tripe.

When you are unable to demonstrate that you understand another perspective, it just shows your limitations. So pile it on: "All conservatives are all bad, all the time". Very astute.

    Holierthanthou ?
The name is appropriate. What's with the conservative bashing?
It's a DNC party, protested by DNC radicals, in a Dem leaning city run by a Democrat mayor and city council. Everywhere you look in the equation there's dems suing dems over trying to deny dems 1st amendment rights to protest dems because, ... etc.

Conservatives have nothing to do with it ... unless you're proposing that Re-Create '68 members listen to <gasp> Rush Limbaugh !!

I don't care who you are, the crap cannon is a hoot ! And it might make the convention smell better too. Win-win all around. Now c'mon and crack a smile and do a big brown-goo group hug !!

I, for one, having suffered with chronic constipation for the past
seven years, sadly lament the city's decision not to use the "crap cannon". I had high hopes on finally exhausting months of painful backup by being one of the first recipients of the treatment. Well, back to Medicare, colonics, Metamucil and Ex-Lax. Thanks for nothing, Hickenlooper and DNC.

Wouldn't using a weapon that causes protestors to defecate then put the protestors in violation of the new Denver law prohibiting possesion of chains and "feces bombs" by the protestors?

    Hmmmmmmmm.

    Your reasoning is impeccable Mymilehi.

How do Police employ TASERs without shocking themselves? How do they shoot criminals without shooting themselves? How do they employ Pepper Spray without spraying themselves? ( Actually, that does happen sometimes).

These devices must all be myths, too, then.

Excellent rebuttal davies, utilizing the best of conservative polemic techniques, the "I've called it stupid therefore it is stupid" argument. A real time saver!

I guess if you understood what Holier was saying, you'd understand what Holier is saying!
