Child run over in driveway by grandpa

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

A 1-year-old Jefferson County boy was injured Wednesday when he ran out to greet his grandfather, who was parking his tow truck in the driveway.

Jorge Herrera was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where the State Patrol said he was in serious condition.

At 4:48 p.m. Wednesday, the boy's grandfather, also named Jorge Herrera, 43, was backing up his 2001 Ford F-550 pickup truck, which has a flatbed trailer behind it, in his driveway at 1103 Quaker St., in unincorporated Jefferson County.

"As he was backing, his 1- year-old grandson ran out of the house to greet him," said Trooper Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the State Patrol.

The boy ran in front of the truck as the grandfather pulled forward to straighten his parking.

"Grandpa doesn't realize that grandson is over there, and the rear tires strike the boy, who sustains bodily injury," Mares said.

Mares said the tires apparently ran over the boy's right thigh but he was not pinned under the truck.

The one thing that strikes me odd here, is that is was 1. Who in their right mind would let a 1 year old run into the drive way with out being right next to them??? I have a 11 month old grandson and I dont even let him in a ROOM with out me let alone a driveway??? Where was the mom or grandma? If they were there why didnt they grab the child or at least yell at grampa to look out. None the less, my prayers and thoughts go out to this family and may he heal quickly and with out on going damage.

You're so right Jackie.. I always made sure the storm door was locked so the little ones couldn't bolt out the door. You really have to watch children close. The grandfather probably couldn't see the child over the huge vehicle back or front. What a tragedy. Bless them all.

It is possible that the mother thought the child was with grandma or another family member and vice versa. The pain they must be feeling is unimaginable. May the little boy make a speedy and full recovery.

A one year old? Could it be the child was closer to two? To be able to "run" outside. I am raising my grandchild and I have to agree with Jackie, you never allow a small child to be alone, ever! No matter how safe your home is, a child can always find something you have missed. Doors should always be locked. You hear of children taking off and being found later, and not always a happy ending! Parents need to act more responsible when raising their children or grandchildren. I hope all will be okay for this little one and that everyone concerned understands that this could have ended much worst then it did and to now step up and take the responsibility of raising this baby more seriously!
