Those looking to forgo busy city streets during the Democratic National Convention next month may find another incentive to do so: free gasoline.

The Society of Leisure Enthusiasts, a group that markets luxury vacations, is working with 14 property management companies throughout Colorado to offer those with convention fatigue a $50 prepaid gas card and an extra 10 percent off already reduced summer lodging rates.

Mike McFadden, the society's chief executive officer, said that the group had indications that high gas prices were a big concern for summer travelers.

Discounts are available on more than 400 vacation homes and condos in mountain areas including Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen, Telluride and Winter Park.

The promotion, running Aug. 21 through 28, targets Colorado residents or those who are here for the convention.

"There are so many things to do in all these resort towns in Colorado and people don't realize that, because they think you just come to ski here," said Tricia McIntyre, president of Aspen Luxury Rentals, one of the participating management companies.

McIntyre said that a two-bedroom property in Aspen costs between $850 and $1,800 a night, but that guests can save $85 to $180 during the promotion.
