It’s a new title, but Doug Moe will be back for a 19th overall season with the Nuggets.
Moe, an assistant the past 3 ½ seasons, told the Rocky Mountain News on Thursday afternoon he will return to the Nuggets next season as a consultant. Moe previously had said it was likely he would return in that role, but wanted to meet first with Nuggets officials at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
“I’ll be there part time,’’ said Moe, who makes his home in San Antonio. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ll go to some road games and I won’t be at every home game.’’
Moe was Denver’s head coach from 1980 to '90 after having been assistant with the team in the ABA from 1974-76. He was a Nuggets consultant from 2002 until moving to the bench midway through the 2004-05 season.
Moe, 69, stepped down as an assistant when his contract expired June 30 due to wanting to spend more time with his grandchildren. But he is close with Nuggets coach George Karl, and one of his duties will be to continue to serve as a sounding board for Karl.
“It’s a great opportunity,’’ Moe said. “I’ll try to help George as much as I can ... I woke up this morning, so it’s a good day.’’
Moe said he will sign a one-year contract and evaluate matters next summer.
Moe is the winningest coach in Nuggets history, having gone 432-357 and being chosen 1987-88 NBA Coach of the Year. The number 432 hangs in his honor at the Pepsi Center.

Big Jane wouldn't have it any other way. Camby saves the Nugs $40 million, they can't win with him so what's the diff?
Remember when Doug had zero plays? Kiki and Alex do.
Doug Moe is one cool guy and always has been. He got it, a long time before there was, it.
