REGIONAL SCENE: Mastroeni, Gomez are MLS reserve stars

Colorado Rapids midfielders Pablo Mastroeni and Christian Gomez have been selected as reserves for the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, set for July 24 in Toronto against English club West Ham United.

Mastroeni has now been chosen nine straight times for the MLS All-Star Game. Gomez will be playing in his fourth All-Star Game, previously having representing D.C. United.

New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel, Toronto FC defender Jim Brennan, Houston Dynamo goalie Pat Onstad, Los Angeles Galaxy forward Edson Buddle and Houston Dynamo midfielder Dwayne De Rosario were also chosen as reserves.

GREEN PACES NUGGETS Taurean Green recorded 17 points in 25 minutes to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 90-79 win Monday night against the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Dahntay Jones added 16 points for the Nuggets. Joey Graham paced Toronto with 16 points.

MOVING FORWARD Top-seeded Oliver Grabb advanced 8 and 6 against Lakewood resident Ben Davis in Tuesday's opening round of the Colorado Golf Association's Junior Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club.

Second-seeked Brendan Connolly also advanced 3 and 2 against Thornton resident Chris Keirns. Third-seeded Derek Fribbs won 1 up against Longmont resident Dylan Wonnacott.

* Pueblo resident Bryce Schroeder advanced to the semifinal round of the Colorado Women's Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at The Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, winning 3 and 2 against Castle Rock resident Dana Zamprelli.

* Former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway will be playing with two-time champion Bill Loeffler and Paul Lobato in the HealthONE Colorado Open on July 24-27 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

"I couldn't ask for two closer friends to tee it up with than Billy and Paul," said Elway. "Those two and I have played countless times together and they both bring out the best in my game."

BADWATER'S BEST Littleton teacher Jamie Donaldson won the women's division of the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon across California's Death Valley on Tuesday.

Donaldson, 33, set a women's course record and placed third overall in 26 hours, 51 minutes, 33 seconds. Los Angeles resident Jorge Pacheco won the overall race in 23:20:16.
